What constututes a bad pregnancy diet?

Now, this gives me so much worry that I thought some of you could help me out.

Before I got pregnant I had a fab diet, just stuffed with fruit and veg. But since getting pregnant (26 weeks ago) I've just become carb mad (seedy bread, pasta, rice). I try to eat fruit and veg but it turns my stomach and I struggle to get it down me. I take pregnacare capsules, and have done from six weeks, and don't eat fast food or anything too madly fatty (except for a bag of chips every blue moon) but I worry that my useless fruit and veg intake is doing some damage. Apart from a banana once a day, and the odd satsuma or apple if I can manage it, no other fruit passes my lips. What do you think?

As far as I can recall, the foetus is doing just dandy taking its nutrients from you so you don't need to worry overmuch on its account.

All I've eaten for the last eleven weeks is white bread, white rice and plain pasta. It's only in the last couple of days that I've even been able to think about eating fruit. I wouldn't worry, your body lets you know what you need.

I was the same, ate really well before pregnancy, then once pregnant couldn't face the 'right' food, found myself wanting plain white pasta all the time. It got better after the first trimester once the morning sickness passed, but I still find a lot of vegetables just don't appeal to me at all. Have to force myself to eat fruit, managing to get wholegrain from cereal and wholemeal bread but not in the quantities that are recommended, never eat enough of the 'green and yellow' food you're supposed to have. No advice for you really, just to let you know you aren't alone. I always try to get at least four calcium foods a day though - I know the baby will just take what she needs from me but I don't want osteoporosis in later life!

There was a lot of stuff on the news recently about the effects of bad pregnancy diets and I think they were really referring to people who ate loads of fast food high in fat and salt and additives. I think as long as you are not doing this then don't worry. if you are worried about vitamins could you take pregnacare or similar?

I am 22 weeks and barely ate anything for the first 18weeks so I know how odd it can be.

don't fret, you body is telling you what it needs. my body required lots of hot chocolate and icecream if memory serves.

littleducks · 18/10/2007 14:50

i had hypersemesis with dd, so i ate what i could and it was crap. She was perfect but it did leave me in a bit of a state i wouldnt worry about the baby but prob would say keep taking the tablets for you so you dont end up nutrient drained.

claricebeansmum · 18/10/2007 14:56

I think your body dictates what you need - eat what you feel the need for.

Quite what my body was after when all I ate for months on end was frozen ribena, creme eggs and roast chicken flavour crisps is a mystery but DS does not seem to have suffered.

Thank you, thanky you, thank you! I reckon I'm not doing too badly in that case, then. It's just that when you conatantly read about pregnancy and diets in the press and when every pregnancy book I pick up bangs on about how important it is to get the right nutrients I start feeling like I'm failing in some way. I kick myself for it but it still gets to me!

I do take Pregnacare which must help but I feel endlessly guilty for scooting through the fruit and veg aisles in Tesco so that I can peck clean the bread shelves. Oh, how the bags of spinach catcall as I sneak past! How the caulis cock their snooks at my trolley!

You have all reassured me though. You've taken a load off my mind, not least because I had a bucket of pasta for my lunch. Again. It was bastard delicious though!

Thing is, my lovely, this is just a Taste (ha!) of Things to Come, guilt-wise. In a year's time you'll be feeling massively guilt-tripped about the million and one things you should be doing to Facilitate your Infant's Development, and/or Feed Your Precious Darling. Get used to it. And eat pasta. Good stuff, pasta.

God, I know. If I'm like this now what the frig will I be like when I leave her cry for a couple of minutes or give her a biscuit to keep her quiet or just abandon her in a supermarket? I fear that this is the end of my sanity for, well, the rest of my days.

Sob!
