Cyclogest safe in pregnancy

Hi ladies,
Ive had 2 embryo transfers. The second was successful, however I've had constant bleeding. This luckily stopped at 9 weeks.
I am now 14 weeks. The consultant told me to continue taking cyclogest pessaries until 28 weeks, due to previous miscarriages.

I have heard that the progesterone can cause birth defects. Has anyone been told of the risks with taking the cyclogest?
My consultant just said that it is safe and didn't seem worried about the risk of birth defects.

Progesterone does not cause birth defects. It's absolutely required to support pregnancy.

Where on Earth did you read it causes birth defects?!?? Basically, progesterone has nothing bad about it. Changing progesterone levels can make you feel 'hormonal' (ie pms) but progesterone in and of itself has no drawbacks.

Why would a highly trained consultant not mention birth defects? Because it's nonsense!!!!

I'm taking it from 11 weeks and will take up 2 36 weeks to try and help prevent another prem term birth. They do have some side affects like any medication that some women experience but deff not birth defects

I was on cyclogest from 4-19 weeks and I did read that there is a potential link with its use and hypospadias in boys. However since this can be corrected surgically, and the ‘link’ was correlation not causation I personally felt that this was a risk worth taking, especially since I a) wasn’t necessarily pregnant with a boy anyway and b) wanted a live baby at the end of it and having endured miscarriages previously knew that cyclogest might be literally life saving for my baby.

I was on cyclogest pessaries from 23 weeks up until 36 weeks, three times a day, no issues with DD

I took 3 cyclogest pessaries twice a day until 22 weeks. It msintains the pregnsncy. You jeed ot. It rndures you stay pregnant. I also had progesterone injections too (extremely painful).

I think your info source might be dodgy.

I took it for the first 12 weeks following ivf and was then asked if I wanted to take part in a trial and take it (or a placebo) for the final 12 weeks.
It'll do baby no harm whatsoever, don't worry. Your consultant would have talked to you about any risks.

You have to remember to read into WHO has conducted any research you read - they have a vested interest in the results they achieve!!
