Can't move with (sorry tmi) constipation 12 weeks

I'm about 12 weeks now. I've got Hyperemesis as with all my pregnancies but I don't remember ever struggling with constipation. I don't ever usually get it anyway.
About 4 days ago I felt a bit bloated but went for a walk and the very tops of my legs started to ache like I had ran a marathon, I'd only walked for 20 minutes.
The next day it felt like I had spent the day before on a treadmill in the gym but the pain had spread to my bum and my lower abdomen. I struggled to sit down, but once I was sitting I was fine. Standing wasn't a problem.
Now I just can't move, if I move too suddenly I get an extremely sharp pain in my abdomen. If I cough or sneeze its unbearable.
I've called the midwife and she said I must have over done it on my walk, but I was with my 2 year old and he walks extremely slow.
I'm really worried this isn't constipation and it's something to do with my pregnancy. I had a miscarriage in the past so everything panics me.
I have been going to the toilet so I don't understand why I'm in so much pain.
Has anyone had something similar or have any advice?

Op I had a lot of constipation at the start of my pregnancy and it never felt like that. If your midwife is dismissing it, is there another medical professional you can talk to?

fashu · 19/11/2020 19:31

@HotDiggidy2017
It definitely doesn't feel normal. I'm trying to call the early pregnancy unit now but there is no answer. Tbh it usually takes 40 mins to get through to them and I suppose it doesn't help it being past 5 now!
It did seem like the midwife thought I was over reacting. Said just take a paracetamol and take it easy, but I work from home and my son doesn't need to be carried anymore, I dont know what I could have over done!

I have constipation often and it doesn't really feel like that. What makes you think it could be? Especially if you've been going to the toilet.

Could it be round ligament pain? That was horrible with both of my pregnancies - like a stitch or cramp but lower down.

Workingmama1 · 19/11/2020 22:05

Definitely worth trying to get a second opinion. If you cant get hold of EPU you could try 111 but they will probably refer you to your GP or the EPU anyway. Could it be wind? I got it really bad around then, rennies and peppermint tea really helped. Its OK to take a paracetamol to help manage the pain.

@milleniumhandandprawn
I guess this is what I imagine bad constipation would feel like?
Could be round ligament pain especially that it's made worse when I move ....
Surprisingly my dad had a theory that because I have a retroverted uterus that could be pressing on my intestines making me feel like I'm constipated. I actually think he could be onto something?
I finally got through to the hospital and they agreed it is most likely constipation and have advised to ask my GP for some pregnancy safe laxative, but if its not cleared up in a few days I might have to go in for some treatment which I obviously want to avoid!

My nan suggested weetabix and my mum dropped off some prunes ew!
My husband is really worried since we had a miscarriage in March. I don't think it's anything serious but it is playing on my mind :(

@Workingmama1 could be wind! It's so tough! So many things going on in that area! I just hope it goes away soon! I dont think I could live with this for another 6 months Grin

I definitely get pains when constipated and it is trapped wind. I suffered with constipation in pregnancy. Drink water then some more, then more. Have a glass of water by your bed for when you wake up. Keep eating regularly to push food through your system. Spend some time on the toilet. Don't push but rock slightly to encourage movement along your colon.

CoalCraft · 19/11/2020 22:23

I've had mild to moderate constipation a lot over the years, both pregnancy and not pregnancy related, and it's never felt like what you describe. For me it's just a bloated feeling with an occasional gripey sort of pain in my abdomen, relieved by passing gas. It doesn't usually cause me much suffering, just a bit of discomfort.

Still, I'm sure it feels different for everyone! If it is constipation, then I recommend reading lots of bran flakes, drinking tons of water, starting as active a you can and cutting back on eggs and cheese (wish I could follow my own advice there...)

HotDiggidy2017 · 20/11/2020 13:43

Lol @CoalCraft it’s so difficult to stick to it isn’t it? 😂 popcorn is my cryptonite

Not sure if this will help you but a handful of raisins are better than laxatives for me... also gently rocking in a Child’s Pose (yoga position) always helps relieve my wind, can put a cushion under your tummy if the stretch is too much. Had endo on my bowel for quite a few years so very familiar with wind and constipation, the constipation came back for the start of my pregnancy though seemed to calm down at about 10 weeks.

adogisforlife91 · 20/11/2020 14:38

OP do you have any sort of pain around your back or sides? I had similar to you, thought it was terrible constipation that I tried to walk off and it turned out I had a raging Kidney infection! (wasnt pregnant at the time though) If your midwife is not taking you seriously it might be worth ringing 111 and see what they say, especially with pain in the abdomen. I remember being so embarassed telling them I hadn't been to the loo in over a week but you gotta do what you gotta do!

Hope you find the solution soon :)

EssieMay · 20/11/2020 16:45

OP i had very similar pains as you. I suffered with constipation and digestive trouble before pregnancy so know my insides pretty well. Since about 7 weeks its been awful on and off. At 12 weeks i was in agony and could barely move. Very bloated and lots of pains like you described. I was in tears with it sometimes. I was going to the loo but it was very dark and hard so i knew it was constipation troubles. I still get bouts like that now (currently 27 weeks) where i get sharp stomach pains and pains in my lower body especially when walking or sitting. Ive found fibre gel works effectively a sachet before bed and a glass of pure orange with the pulp for fibre bulk with breakfast. After 3 days of this its eases off. I found the pain very scary but it has just been constipation ive been checked over and baby is growing perfectly. However do push your midwifery team if your worried. Hope this might help.

Hey, was wondering what your outcome was? I have all these things your describing.

Northernerinwales · 29/08/2022 19:41

I’ve struggled with constipation this whole pregnancy and I’ve never felt like that however I do have pelvic girdle pain and it sort of sounds a bit like what your describing. I swear by wheatabix and a activia yogurt every day. I swear it has helped loads

fashu · 30/08/2022 12:11

Hey! Sorry to hear your suffering with this, all the laxatives, prunes, weetabix didn't help me but the constant pain did kind of just go away in its own a few weeks later, but I was always in quite a lot of pain walking. Towards the end of my pregnancy moving around in bed was almost unbearable, hubby had to help me up etc. So was probably PGP, definitely go to your GP midwife to try and get it sorted before it gets worse. My baby was ok, he's 15 months old today. He's in the 91-98th percentile so that probably didn't help either.

Hope everything works out for you x
