Hi. Just back from my 31 week mw appointment and looking at my notes and have seen the mw has marked my baby's growth chart at 95th for fundal height!! She never mentioned anything to me about it.

I have a growth on Tuesday but I'm panicking now!
My DC 2 had shoulder dystocia.
I have had a blood test for GD which came back fine.
I'm only 4'10" so this is really worrying me.

The growth scan was booked in anyway as I am having growths scans die to having low papp-a.

Did anyone get induced early because of big baby?

Hi, I wouldn’t take the fundal height too seriously. I had it measure last week and mine was measuring 2 weeks ahead and even above the 95th percentile. But the midwife didn’t say she was worried and she said it is not that accurate.

I went this week for a growth scan (for other reasons) and the baby was absolutely perfect and measuring between the 40th-50th percentile.

So don’t worry too much, specially until you have the scan as it is a lot more accurate than the fundal height.

Good luck!

If your worried then speak to your midwife and ask her about it. It’s always best to ask so you don’t go over and over it in your head. They won’t mind.
I measured below 20th percentile for fundal height with my first pregnancy and my growth scans showed baby as below 20th percentile as well but then she was born the day before her due date weighed 8lb 2 and very long. The fundal height and the growth scans aren’t always accurate and babies can slow down or speed up their growth as well.

Thank you both. I just feel frightened of baby getting stuck having had should dystocia previously and that caused a really bad tear!

Just to add my none of my previous were babies were huge.
DC1 7lbs at 42+2
DC2 7lbs 10 at 40+3 (shoulder dystocia)
DC3 7lbs 8 at 39 weeks
So, I'm not predisposed to big babies!

I grow big babies. My latest was 10lbs 4. My health boards policy was induction at 38 weeks or c sec at 39 weeks. They wouldn’t have induced any earlier. I had my son at 39 weeks xxx

VHB88 · 19/11/2020 18:46

All 3 of my babies measured small, my youngest measure 3 weeks behind but all were born at least 8pounds so I don’t think measurements are 100% reliable. My second (8pounds 1) was also shoulder dystocia but my third baby was 8pounds 11 and the birth was by far my quickest and easiest x

Stacylouise14 · 19/11/2020 22:59

My son was measuring average but I knew he was big I could feel it, I was in agony when he turned but no the midwife said I would be having a 7lb baby, he was 10lb14 and my daughter I was told was measuring big and had to have lots of growth scans towards the end was 7lb2 so I wouldn’t worry to much about it

Bing765 · 20/11/2020 07:56

My belly measurements showed baby was on the 90th centile. She was born a tiny 5lb12oz and below the 9th centile. They are very inaccurate

Hatepickinganame · 20/11/2020 09:15

I have big babies! My son was 10lb 6oz at 40+5. This was 6 years ago but I was told they wouldn't have induced for big baby alone, it was because I also had polyhydramnios. Having same complications this pregnancy. Am going back at 38 weeks to make a plan for delivery apparently. Whether that means leaving me to go naturally or inducing me I don't know 😕

Grumpy19 · 20/11/2020 10:08

Thanks everyone.

I know they will induce me at 40 weeks because of the low papp-a. I think the thing that worries me most is my previous experience of shoulder dystocia and how quickly a 'normal ' delivery can change.

I am just focus on discussing all this with my consultant on Tuesday.
