Absolutely miserable

Hello. I'm 8 weeks pregnant and miserable. I'm being sick 4-5 times per day, nausea all day, and have fainted twice. My blood pressure is on the low side and I have no energy.

The midwife prescribed anti sickness meds and told me to rest. The meds aren't working and I have a toddler to look after so rest isn't easy.

I just don't know what to ask for or what else they can do? I read that they won't give fluids unless you have ketones, which I doubt I will as I am managing to eat once a day.

Sorry you are having such a crap time.
Is it cyclizine the midwife gave you?
It doesn't work for everyone, if you call the gp they can give you something else to try.

I didn't have key tones but still was given fluids when I went to a&e, maybe I was just lucky, not sure

BlenheimOrange · 19/11/2020 16:42

There are different kinds of meds. I had to try 3 kinds, all through GP practice

chasingshunshine · 19/11/2020 20:09

Thanks for the advice. Which medication ended up working for you in the end?

Try a sip of coke/Diet Coke whenever you feel nauseous.
Don’t ‘drink’ it, just a sip.

flossletsfloss · 19/11/2020 20:15

I agree cyclizine doesn't work for everyone. Ask for a different one. It's so tough, you have my sympathies.

BlenheimOrange · 19/11/2020 22:25

Combo of cyclizine plus metoclopramide this pregnancy, but promethazine last pregnancy.

MyBabyBoyBlue · 19/11/2020 22:31

I'm sorry you're having such a crap time.i came here to sympathise and say you are totally not alone - I'm 9w3d and have been hospitalised twice in the last week with morning sickness. Cant keep anything down at all and was admitted with ketones of 4+. Cyclizine doesn't work for me either and my doc said odensatron (sp) would be the next they'd try when I go back in tomorrow.

It feels so awful doesn't it, and the problem is nobody really gets it until you've been through it! Sending you positive thoughts - I know it can get you down, but it will be worth it and it won't last forever xx

chasingshunshine · 20/11/2020 09:26

Thanks so much for the replies, they are really helpful.

The dr is going to call me. Just wondering about keytones - will they not offer fluids unless ketones are high? I managed to hold down about half of my dinner yesterday, so assuming they won't be high this morning.

I'm just so so dehydrated that I feel I need fluids. I'm also thin anyway, but have lost weight.

On the day I had 4+ ketones, I had managed two spoonfuls of cereal so think its more about your fluids. It is worth getting checked anyway because I had no idea mine would be so bad because I had managed to keep down little bits of food until then. Being properly rehydrate on a drip will make you feel better too.

MyBabyBoyBlue · 20/11/2020 13:55

And just read you've lost weight too. I've lost 6kg in the last 10 days - get yourself checked out and on a drip xx

chasingshunshine · 20/11/2020 14:29

Sorry you're having such a hard time of it - it really is horrible.

GP said unless my keto test was awful they won't take me in. He prescribed ondastron instead - read up about possible birth defects in the first trimester and I'm not sure I want to take them.

No idea what to do! I just need some fluids to feel normal again

You should read more about ondansetron on the pregnancy support sickness website, the side effects are questionable. There is a good video on there about it too.

Hope it helps, I ended up
Taking ondanseton and cyclizine together

bunhead34 · 20/11/2020 14:49

There is a good thread on here called 'hyperemesis support' you should join.
Sorry I don't know how to link it!

MyBabyBoyBlue · 20/11/2020 17:27

I am wary of taking ondansetron too especially in the first trimester and am currently tempted to decline and try and get by with regular drips at least for a bit. I actually found my GP was not that helpful and in the end, went into hospital to get checked. I know its not ideal during the pandemic, but you are more likely to get the help you need.

At least with each day that passes, you're one day closer to it being over! That's what I have to keep telling myself! Xx

MyBabyBoyBlue · 20/11/2020 17:28

Also, the hospital put me on a drip before I'd even managed a urine sample - they don't want to take a chance.

chasingshunshine · 20/11/2020 19:00

@MyBabyBoyBlue Did you go straight to a&e? I still haven't had a call back from the GP with my urine results and I am so unwell/dehydrated

OP posts:
MyBabyBoyBlue · 20/11/2020 19:26

@chasingsunshine I called 111, got a doctor call back within 15 minutes and the doctor sent an ambulance to take me to a and e. If you're feeling unwell, please call 111, they'll be able to help you, and don't be tempted to play down how awful you feel! Hyperemesis is horrendous and you need proper treatment xx

MyBabyBoyBlue · 21/11/2020 11:43

@chasingshunshine hope you're ok, xx
