Coronavirus vaccine - will you have it?

Just that, really. Will you have a coronavirus vaccine when you're pregnant and it's not tested for safety for pregnancy yet?

I'm in two minds as to whether to have it myself. I've just found out I'm pregnant, and no one else knows yet.

I am likely to be one of the first groups of people to be offered it due to my job.

I'm generally pro-vaccine and I've already had the flu jab but I am a little cautious about this vaccine while pregnant as like you said it's not been tested on pregnant women (as far as I'm aware). I'd be up for having it once the baby is born.

Justlovedogs · 19/11/2020 09:52

Not pregnant, pro-vaccine here. I would be very understanding of any pregnant woman not wanting the vaccine until proven in pregnancy and probably wouldn't myself in the same situation.
Good luck with your pregnancy, OP Flowers

There was a similar thread a couple of weeks ago and the vast majority of posters said they most definitely would not have it during pregnancy. There is no way I would, although would consider it in the future.

@MimiDaisy11 likewise, I think! I've had the flu vaccine but I'm also mindful of this being a new type of vaccine.

But I'm also aware that if I did catch COVID, that would be really not great for me or my baby's health.

I'm not due until July so it's quite a long/ potentially tense wait, too!

@Justlovedogs I'm usually so pro vaccine that it's really confusing me that this time I'm not sure! Thanks, that's really helpful xx

@Somethingsnappy thank you- good to know!

Pro vaccine, but I seriously doubt I'd be offered it being pregnant and you should make the person what offers it to you aware you are pregnant so they can best advise you.

It won't have been tested on pregnant women, so ethically (I don't know, maybe also from a licence perspective) it won't be available to pregnant women. What will usually happen as women get the vaccine who didn't know they were pregnant, they will track those cases and use those examples to determine risks. When they have enough evidence then it would be licenced for use in pregnancy

rosieb060 · 19/11/2020 10:05

Thank you @PlanBea! I'm a key worker so I'm not sure how it will work to be honest.

I also was hoping not to share it with anyone else until 12 weeks, but I think this might mean I have to tell my manger earlier.

I will if it's recommended for and offered to pregnant women, but it almost certainly won't be for two reasons -

  • Lack of evidence of covid being particularly dangerous in pregnancy
  • Lack of testing in pregnant women

In fact I think it'll be very challenging for anyone young enough to be pregnant and in good health to get the vaccine any time soon. There's going to be limited amounts at first and healthcare professionals and the very vulnerable are naturally to of the list to receive doses.

PlanBea · 19/11/2020 10:09

@rosieb060 you wouldn't even need to tell your boss, just when you were with the person giving the vaccine, a quick "I'm pregnant, am I able to have it?" - they will likely already ask things like allergies, any previous vaccine reactions etc

On the other hand, I do view telling your boss the same as telling a doctor or midwife - a practical thing to get you what you need. They shouldn't go round telling people, and it doesn't distract from telling family "first". Particularly in healthcare, it's worth them knowing to risk assess you appropriately and give you the support to have the best pregnancy you can Smile

titchy · 19/11/2020 10:10

You won't be offered it unless you haven't disclosed the fact that your pregnant.

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 19/11/2020 10:13

I’m pro-vaccine normally but there’s no way I’d have it whilst pregnant.

emma911030 · 19/11/2020 10:26

I can't imagine it will be tested on pregnant women as it won't be considered ethical.. this is why so many medications say not to take while pregnant or to seek advice from your GP before taking them as it would be unethical for there to be a trial of a medication/vaccination on pregnant women incase it was to cause pregnancy/foetal complications. It would be a case of ok it's safe to use for non pregnant people so it is then down to personal preference if you wish to take the risk..
Just to clarify I'm pro vaccine, I likely won't be having it while pregnant but I only have a few weeks left to go anyway so would probably just wait a little longer and have it after I have given birth. I am at higher risk as it is with twin pregnancy as well as having an underlying health condition relating to my immune system.
