Hi

I’m usually around 10:5, I noticed last week I was 10:6-10:7 but this week I’m back to 10:5. Should I be worried about not gaining weight. What was your experience in the first trimester?

In my first pregnancy I hardly gained any weight during the first trimester. I has my first scan at 20 weeks and was still wearing my normal clothes , but ended up putting on just over 1.5 stone during the whole pregnancy and had a nearly 8lbs baby.

Fruitloops34 · 19/11/2020 08:38

I lost 10 pounds in the first trimester. I’m certainly putting it back on now lol.

hoitytoit · 19/11/2020 08:43

I gained just under a stone in my WHOLE pregnancy OP AND I went to 41 weeks. All is fine. At 9 weeks you are not expected to put on much weight really.

Babyontheway21 · 19/11/2020 08:45

That’s good to hear thank you, I haven’t had sickness either so there wasn’t a reason in my head for it.

I lost weight in the first trimester, due to a lot of vomiting. Put on 10kg (1.5 stone) overall and had a baby that weighed more than 8lb.

Babyontheway21 · 19/11/2020 09:09

I’ve been really luck with sickness the odd bokeGrin my boobs were very sore but they’ve got better and not as bad. I just want to get to the first scan to make sure it’s still there and growing as it should

My 9 weeks I weighted 4-5kg less than when I got pregnant and baba is absolutely fine

CBhope · 19/11/2020 09:17

I lost weight in my first trimester. I had a very stressful time and really had to force myself to eat anything. First thing my midwife said at around my 16 week appointment was ‘you’ve lost weight’ just by looking at me. She wasn’t majorly concerned though and I definitely made up for it in the second trimester. I wouldn’t worry

Babdoc · 19/11/2020 09:26

You are worrying needlessly, OP. Most women eat far too much when pregnant and struggle to lose the excess after the birth.
On average, you should only gain between one and four pounds in the whole first trimester.

Wanderdust · 19/11/2020 09:44

Please don't worry, sounds normal to me. I was about to come on and say I've only put on 3lbs (I'm now 10+5) but, after seeing your post before jumping in the shower, I hopped on the scales - I've actually lost 2lbs! So only 1lb gain overall (despite me begging my husband to go out in the pouring rain at 9 o'clock last night to get me two large portions of McDonald's chips, with lashings of salt! Grin).

Funnily enough, when I was out yesterday, I caught sight of my reflection and thought my legs were looking skinny - but my shape is definitely changing, especially around the torso (hello boobs). I feel very bloated aswell, despite it not being reflected in my weight.

My point is, don't go solely by the scales either. If I've learned anything so far (this is my first), it's that pregnancy is surprisingly inconsistent! Symptoms, niggles and even weight gain come and go.

Take care and congratulations! Flowers

MimiDaisy11 · 19/11/2020 09:52

It's not uncommon to lose weight especially if you have morning sickness etc. Unless you're losing or gaining a crazy amount of weight there's no reason to be concerned.

Onekidnoclue · 19/11/2020 09:55

A couple of pounds here and there is nothing. Certainly not in the first tri. Tbh I don’t know why you would put on weight? I’m pregnant with my second and only put on weight after week 16ish. I though that was normal? At that stage the baby is still smaller than an apple and weighs naff all so extra weight is generally bloat!

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 19/11/2020 09:55

I'm 27 weeks and still exactly the same weight as pre-pregnancy, I think due to loss of appetite and severe heartburn.

mizzles · 19/11/2020 11:50

You might find it reassuring to look at the Babycentre infographics on the baby's size during pregnancy. At nine weeks it's tiny! Even the placenta and extra blood won't account for much at this point. And your body doesn't actually need a lot of extra fat to grow a baby.

Thirdlifecrisis · 19/11/2020 12:04

I lost about 4lb in the first trimester and started gaining at the start of the second. Don't worry it'll even out 🙂

kfcplease · 19/11/2020 12:35

I'm 33 weeks and only put on 8 kg so far! I only started putting on weight around 27 weeks.

DMT1982 · 19/11/2020 13:05

I put on a stone throughout the entire pregnancy and had a healthy 6lb 4 ounce baby. Everyone’s different and the midwife measures your bump anyways. Try not to worry it’s still very early days

Babyontheway21 · 19/11/2020 20:51

Thanks everyone for your replies it definitely has put my mind at rest knowing that you all
Have had similar experiences. It’s my first time so I’m a panic merchantBlush

I lost a bit of weight in the first trimester as I had bad nausea & lots of food aversions. Started gaining in the 2nd and I've put on a lot now (31 weeks). Kinda hoping it slows down a bit!

MaryShelley1818 · 19/11/2020 21:26

There is no reason to put on weight in the first trimester (obviously perfectly fine if you have but also nothing to worry about if you haven't).
I'm 28wks pregnant and put on 3lbs so far and no throwing up either. In my last pregnancy I gained 11lbs total and baby was 8lbs 3 so back to prebirth weight after a couple of days. I am overweight though.

rorosemary · 19/11/2020 21:33

Your not supposed to put on much in the first trimester. Nothing is fine too. Many women even lose weight if they feel nausea often. Just take your vitamins, try to make some healthy choices here and there and you'll be fine.
