I'm very impatient here (am flat flat flat... when not bloated ) and wondered how far along people were when they started to show with their first (have heard that subsequent babies show much quicker because of less than fabulous stomach muscles ). Thank you!

I currently pregnant with my first baby and I am shocked at how fast my tummy has bulged!!

I do agree with you though, I think I look fat rather then pregnant. I'm 18 weeks now and by belly is now starting to look like a bump! However I still feel fat!

Everyone at work keeps saying how my bump is getting 'rounder' by the week!

I am happy with this as at least they can see i'm pregnant and not just getting fat!!

spugs · 18/10/2007 15:08

i could tell from about 20 weeks, no one lse noticed till more like 28 weeks. was very skinny (at the start not the end) and bump was very neat

Mrsmope · 18/10/2007 15:10

Was wearing all my normal clothes until five months until one morning I woke up and my tummy had popped out and had to phone in work to say I couldn't come in as none of clothes fit me.

spookykitty · 18/10/2007 15:12

I was in maternity trousers at 20 weeks with the first one.

I put on 2 stone but it was all over, legs, arms face, she was only 6lbs 3ozs.

Now with DD2 had to give in to maternity trousers at 25 weeks (I was a stone lighter after DD1 though) BUT I only put on weight on the bump, at the end I was a bump on legs. She was nearly 2 weeks late and 9lbs 3ozs. I put on nearly 3 stone (so same as DD1 in final weight) but I was in size 10 jeans the day after she was born. I reckon I was just baby and water and a HUGE bump.

oh and hello Har bless you the excitement of your first pregnancy

Har · 18/10/2007 15:20

Hello Sk ! Just want it to feel real!!!
V impressed about your size 10 jeans! My mum was tiny too, gave birth when she was very young (not Lolita young obviously ) which helped, and slipped into her mini flares the next day. Am hoping it's in the genes!

It surprised me Har as with DD1 I was a 12 before getting pregnant, put on 2 stone and the day after I got out the hospital I had to go buy some size 14 cut off type joggers as the maternity trousers were too big and nothing else fitted, they don't tell you that one lol, I lost all that weight and stone to go to a 10 then got pregnant with DD2 put it all back on again, took it all off themn some now I'm an 8, seriously not complaining though the best diet I have ever been on I call it the Mum diet I never sit down for long these days

I remember with my first I did atest a week just to make sure I was still pregnant, even with the scans and everything it doesn't sink in, when I ad her I still couldn't believe it now I'm a mum of 2 and keep thinking "who are these children oh they're mine"

It's great though hopfully I'll only be a few months behind you!

Har · 18/10/2007 15:44

Amazing about the mum diet .
Am very tempted to go and buy another test just to see a nice strong line. A digital one would be even better because then I could stare at 'Pregnant' for 24 hrs (or was it 48 it lasts for? Just know I was gutted when I looked - the 1000th time - and the screen was blank again.) Am going to see my gynae next Wednesday (scan booked at the mother's centre place here for November but am hoping my gynae will be able to scan too). Funny that it's hard to believe even when they've arrived!!!
And I'm hoping you follow very quick behind me too xxx

Har I'm nearly 14 weeks and have a very noticable bump now so I think it totally depends on the person. But I totally know what you mean about wanting to look preggers - I was desperate.
What I would say is if you wear preggy jeans they will make it look much more obvious. Your normal ones will flatten you while these allow it to 'hang out' so to speak!

My advice is get yourself some maternity clothes (zara do great jeans) and you're bump will magically appear!

Hubblebubbletoilandjaffacakes · 18/10/2007 17:15

I started my ante-natal classes at 32 weeks. The other girls didn't believe I was pregnant. I was 36 weeks before I looked pregnant instead of fat.

I do think it has alot to do with your size before though. I was an 18 before I got pregnant with No.1 so it had plenty of growing out room. I showed about 16 weeks with No.2 but I had slimmed down to a size 12 by then.

As much as you want it to show now, you will be fed up with a big uncomfortable, wriggling bump before too long so enjoy your swiftness whilst you can.

Har · 18/10/2007 17:41

Thanks Hubblebubble - I can imagine you're absolutely right, very much the grass is always greener I think! The neat, visible bump will be fun I think but I've seen with friends that it's a very swift descent from cute to waddly and seriously uncomfortable looking! Problem is that I'm so bloated now and cramps etc that I don't feel like putting on slinky outfits and being swift!

Dolly1 - your answer was my favourite , shopping and an early bump! Think I will invest in some nice stretchy trousers at least because as I wrote above I'm really not comfortable with anything tight round my tummy at the moment. 'Hanging out' sounds blissful right now! Thanks for the Zara tip too!

I gained lots of weight early on, or at least it felt like I did, but I didn't look definitely pregnant until around 24 weeks (although if I dressed right I showed a bit at 20 weeks). Boobs expanded dramatically, bump didn't stick out past them until about 30 weeks.

Lazylou · 18/10/2007 17:44

I was 8 months gone with DD before I was showing, but this time (I'm 7/6 pg) I already have a tummy.

Har · 18/10/2007 17:47

8 months Lazylou - wow!

Aiki - well I'm looking forward to the boobs at least. That will console me!

Har · 18/10/2007 18:47

Suwoo - that sounds perfect. Lucky you!

hi har. 21wks and just "came out" today. noone had been believing, but bump popped up last week and today it was soooo much fun to dress pg! wrapped a leopard print scarf round bump to attract max attention and didnt stop stroking bump all day.

cheers for zara tip Dolly.

debinaustria · 19/10/2007 06:56

Har, I remembered last night about my 1st pregnancy and lying flat on the floor, desperately feeling for a bump!!I can't remember how many weeks I was though, just wanted to reassure you, you're not alone in wanting that bump and wanting it now!

Deb

Naetha · 19/10/2007 09:10

Me and DH noticed a definite bump from around 18 weeks, if I wore tight-fitting clothes a bump was noticeable from around 20 weeks.

Some people at work only realised I was pregnant last week, and I'm now 30 weeks!!

However, I was in maternity trousers from about 14 weeks, but that's partly because I had my gall bladder out, and my stomach was all distended, and maternity trousers were the only ones I could fit into!

Har · 19/10/2007 09:10

Tyaca - lol at leopard print scarf and Congratulations !

Hi Deb ! Nice to know I'm not alone in my impatience! Lol at lying on the floor. At the moment no bump in sight (and seems from these posts, won't be one for months) but my whole stomach feels a little hard (not at all obsessed my every tiny thing ), hurts to pull it in (as if I'd done loads - if I ever did loads! - of crunches). Seems the cramping, period pain stage is lessening and now more this tight, slightly tender feeling (normal!?!?)

Screaminglips · 19/10/2007 09:14

i was 18 weeks pg when i started to show properly.....other friends could noticed when i was 2 months pg as i had a tiny bump and at the time i didnt tell anyone that i was pg so i had to keep it all hush hush till i was 12 weeks gone.

VictorVictoria · 19/10/2007 09:14

I am 25 weeks and sometimes, depending on what I am wearing, its hard to tell I am pregnant............

Har · 19/10/2007 09:15

Poor you, Naetha having your gall bladder out while pregnant. Hope you're lots better now! Funny about your work colleagues though! Wonder if people who don't know you're pregnant are scared to say anything till v v obvious though, in case you're not and just well, you know putting weight on there? Seems from these posts that it looks like that for quite a while.

I always won competitions when I was little at being able to stick my tummy out really far so that it looked as if I were pregnant (or what 6 years olds thought was what pregnant looked like), maybe I'll resort to that!

OP posts:
Har · 19/10/2007 09:19

Thanks VV and Screaminglips, like SL's answer - some able to see a bump at 2 months, so if I just get that leopard print scarf...
VV - seems like it's very much to do with what you wear. I have a friend who had a c-section two months early, she never really had a bump (particularly as this was winter so everyone's layered down), only saw it properly when we went swimming one day. She's still sad she didn't get to enjoy her just emerging bump more (though of course no stretch marks!)

I showed v.v.early.I got asked if I was pregnant at 6weeks by someone who "noticed the bump"
but then again I weighed about 7/8 stone,WAS a size 8 and am 4"11.
I got a proper bump at about 16 weeks and now look something like a demented weeble or beached whale at 34 weeks

Ayomi · 30/10/2007 09:48

Hiya. Am 15 weeks with my first at mo. Can no longer fit in old clothes and had to buy maternity trousers & jeans last week - not to mention bras! Weight gain has been noticed at work and as they know i'm pregnant has been taken as a given.
However, I just look fat tbh! No 'bump' to speak of, more just a case of 'cake retention' (though i'm eating a balanced diet and low fat mostly) . I guess it depends on the woman - I am a size 14 and curvy. Only really unnerving thing is mum telling me all the time how fat i'm getting and how hard it will be to shift!
