Hi all! Not sure if this should be in a different section, but hoping for some recommendations. I'm almost 36 weeks so have been putting together my birth plan and practicing my relaxation methods, etc. I'm going to download the audio books app onto my phone. Can anyone recommend any 'nice' books to listen to? I usually read quite gritty literature, for example not long finished reading Trainspotting for the third time. I'd like to avoid trauma, crime, etc. Any tips would be much appreciated Biscuit

My go to book when I’m anxious and can’t sleep is the Princess Bride. There are some sword fights and torture and tense-ish scenes, but it’s tongue-in-cheek fairytale stuff that wouldn’t make a fan of Irvine Walsh blink. Haven’t tried the audiobook, though, and I’d skip the first bit to where the actual Princess Bride starts. (It’s presented as an abridgement with lots of asides from the editor, most of which are amusing, but I find the first section a little tedious and not necessary).

Recently listened to and really enjoyed Sophie Heawood’s memoir The Hungover Games - it’s light and funny and some beautiful reflections on motherhood. There’s a Guardian piece online with a few excerpts so you can see if it’s your cup of tea or not

I love a good audiobook, depends what sort of thing you like. For funny romantic comedy but with a decent story, try ‘The Flatshare’ by Beth O’Leary, her second, ‘The Switch’ is good too. If you like fantasy, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels make really good audiobooks. To be honest most of my library is filled with crime, but I’m also enjoying JKR’s ‘The Ickabog’ at the moment, Stephen Fry is a brilliant narrator. ‘Elinor Oliphant is completely fine’, ‘The GracekeeperS’ and ‘The seven deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle’ are all good too (that last one is a Murder mystery, but in a not super violent, interesting way!).
