Hello

I need advice please. I'm 21 weeks pregnant. I beat type 2 years ago and was fine. Normal hba1c at 9 weeks pregnant.

Fast forward to 19 weeks I start checking myself at home. My blood sugar is in the gd range. Told my consultant who asked a midwife who was not bothered said it's fine. My numbers are clearly high!

I will get the test when I am 26 weeks. And I've been left with this.

My fasting sugar is all over at 5.9 today but past couple days been 6.6 and 6.3.

My 2 hour numbers are bad too and I'm always starving. I have hardly gained any weight this whole time. I cant eat even good carbs in amy meaningful amount. The usual advice of eating protein and fat with carbs isnt giving me normal numbers.

I get so hungry my tummy hurts.

Breakfast same every day. I get different numbers after it this am I read 8.2 after having 2 slice toast with 2 eggs and 25g cheese . The loaf I use is wholemeal 400g so small slices. I normally have 1 but cant get enough fullness out of meals. I eat the recommended protein and alot of fat.

I have gestational diabetes ( 3rd time!) I think you need to be pressing for a second opinion especially since you would be high risk having had type 2 in the past.
This website is good in the mean time www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/recipe-index/
I wouldn’t be able to cope with two small pieces whole meal bread at breakfast either and am 22 weeks. Just stick to the eggs and cheese.

definitely push for a test, not right they won’t test you till later.

I had GD with my first pregnancy and found My body couldn’t handle any carbs at breakfast, all I ate was eggs and cheese and cold meats for the duration, it sucks but after a week or so you get used to it.

After I started doing this I found I could handle larger portions of carbs in the afternoon but after 32 weeks my body just hated carbs.

Can you eat carbs later in the day OP? I had to have carb free (including fruit) for breakfast but evening meal was ok.

Veggielove84 · 17/11/2020 15:10

Hey so yes I could try no carbs at breakfast and maybe a later dinner n no carbs at bedtime snack.

I spoke to a midwife there. She said if my fasting is above 5.1 its gd... even as a type 2 in remission its never that as far as I remember.

However they let you go to 8.5 for 2hours after meals!?? Weird .

Actually I just had a thought ! Could the pregnancy bring out my type 2 again!? Them surely if that's the case I should allowed the type 2 range of blood sugars!?

A type 2 can go to 4-7 fasting and 8.5 2 hours after eating. I meet that range nicely. I've asked to talk to my consultant on the phone and get him to see what he says as that will give me more range. My fasting is never 5.1 even when I was taken off the computer as a type 2! I'm now back on as a type 2 in remission since I told gp i had to check my sugars at 19 weeks pregnant

I think because of the impact on the baby they they want lower levels in pregnancy. As I have a diabetic relative and they were surprised how low my levels had to be. Hence why they go to metformin.

As previous poster said, you go under the diabetic team once diagnosed with GD which means consultant/midwife and nutritionist all diabetic-trained - much better care to be honest.

Veggielove84 · 18/11/2020 10:22

But if its type 2 it's not gestational diabetes?

The GD ranges at my hospital are under 5.3 fasting, under 7.8 post glucose for the GTT. They wanted my bloods to be under 5 fasting, and under 7 2 hours after meals, but different hospitals seem to have different targets. Join the GD UK Fb group.

Like others I didn’t have carbs at breakfast. 2 slices of toast (wholemeal or not) is a lot of carbs. I had full fat Greek yoghurt with peanut butter or eggs for breakfast. Could have carbs later in the day provided paired with fat and protein.

Ok thanks everyone. :)

Another person recommending joining the Gestational diabetes uk mums Facebook group. There's lots of recipes and advice re diabetes in pregnancy.
They would want your levels lower than type 2 levels due to the impact of blood sugar on your baby. Below 5.3mmol for fast and below 7.8mmol 1 hour post meals and under 6.4mmol 2 hours post meals.

Metallicalover · 18/11/2020 11:49

With your testing levels it looks like your diabetes has returned in pregnancy (it probably will go again once you have your baby) is there not a diabetic midwife or nurse you can speak to as it looks as though with the high fasting levels (for pregnancy) and that your struggling with small amounts of good carbs that you need some medication to help with those levels x

Veggielove84 · 18/11/2020 12:03

The midwife called to bring my fasting bloods up to next week instead of late December. They will only start helping me once I'm on their records as having issues even though I'm telling them what I get on my meter. I'll then be passed to diabetes team.
