16 week appointment

Does anyone know what is actually supposed to happen during this one? I feel a bit disheartened after having mine yesterday.

The midwife was lovely and asked how I was feeling, took my blood pressure and booked in my anti-d and 28 week appointment.

However, there was zero mention of the elective section I've requested, I then flagged it up to which she said 'yes the consultant will be getting in touch, you will have to build a case for wanting it'. Which for obvious reasons has left me feeling a bit anxious.

She then asked how I felt mentally (had PND with my first) to which I said fine, although I'm more worried that it could return once baby is here. She then informed me that I'm logged as a cause for concern due to the pnd and will be monitored. I said that's helpful as I'm trying to put necessary steps in place to stop me getting to that same place again, I was met with 'well you're not going to prevent it, but we will work on helping you get better' again just made me feel a bit off?

She didn't check the heartbeat either which I've just seen online is what usually happens.

Am I being overly sensitive? I just feel a bit disheartened really.

Sounds like the midwife did the necessary checks and has referred you to a consultant. Mine was a two minute phone call due to corona, no health checks, now that was disheartening!

I’m expecting a phone call also. Is that all it is? 2 minutes?
The lack of care for pregnant mothers is nothing short of scandalous.

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 17/11/2020 09:12

I’m 9 weeks, had my first appointment and have been told I won’t heard from the midwife again until around 25 weeks when she’ll call and an appointment at 28 weeks so sounds like not all trusts even do a 16 week appointment?

peachypetite · 17/11/2020 09:14

@Fruitloops34 due to COVID yes I had a phone call at 16 weeks and 25 weeks (first time mum) - what can they really do on the phone! Just asked how I was and booked me in for the next appointment. So went from booking in to 25 weeks without seeing a midwife.

peachypetite · 17/11/2020 09:14

Sorry that should say 28!!

iloveyoubutilovememore · 17/11/2020 09:17

@peachypetite wow that's shocking. How far along are you?

Sounds like a standard 16-week appointment.
It doesn't happen much at this stage as it's quite early, including chat about CS as you still may change your mind etc.
Sometimes they listen to the baby's heartbeat sometimes they don't especially as it is just between 2 scans (12th week and 20th week) so unless there is a serious concern (bleeding etc) some midwives don't do it routinely until later.

Turtleturtle81 · 17/11/2020 09:28

That sounds like a standard 16 week appointment to me.

Bouncycastle12 · 17/11/2020 09:29

Some trusts don’t listen for the heartbeat because it can be hard to hear at that point, and obvs people panic if the midwife can’t find it.

Oneandabean · 17/11/2020 12:24

That’s right for a 16 week appointment. It’s mainly a well-being check. Mine was literally 2 minutes on the phone. They don’t start listening to the heartbeat until 24 weeks and don’t start measuring until 28 weeks. It’s kind of pointless but there really isn’t much for them to do at that point.

Disappointedkoala · 17/11/2020 12:30

Another one with a 2 minute phone call - it was mostly to tell me I needed another blood test and just a quick check in to make sure everything was ok.

Had face to face every 2-3 weeks since 28 weeks but virtual appointment with consultant re section at about 28 weeks.

NMS90 · 17/11/2020 12:35

Another 2 min phone call here too, not ideal but it doesn't sound like you were particularly short changed in comparison to everyone else. Hopefully the consultant will be able to help you more x

Funkypolar · 17/11/2020 12:49

Pretty poor that some areas are doing phone appointments.

At my 16 week appointment I had:
Urine sample
Repeat bloods
Blood pressure
Heard heartbeat
Had the chance to ask any questions

Moo678 · 17/11/2020 21:53

I’ve had 3 babies - none of my midwives have listened for heartbeat at 16 wks. Weirdly, my latest midwife mentioned that she would listen in at my 16 wk apt this time. I’m a bit nervous and would probably prefer she didn’t as I’ve heard I can be hit or Miss whether you hear it and I’m worried it will make me extra anxious.

Your midwife doesn’t sound like a great communicator.

DiabeticFirstBaby · 19/11/2020 16:58

Just had my 16 week appointment today with my diabetic midwife-
Had wee dipped
Diabetes bloods taken
BP checked
Listened to heartbeat with doppler and let me record for my husband.
Chatted about whooping cough vaccine
I asked loads of questions
Felt it was a good appointment.
