Sonographer said "he"....slip of the tongue??

Hi. I've just been for my 12 weeks scan....in fact I'm measuring 13+2. The sonographer referred to baby as he in the scan. Was probably just a slip of the tongue but I've had a feeling I was having a girl. What do you think? I'm happy either way but I'm very keen to hear what you all think?

They refer to all foetuses as 'he' as opposed to 'it'. Doesn't reflect the sex of the baby...

They pretty much always say he. Plus you’re only 13 weeks.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/11/2020 11:20

Just be a slip of the tongue, they don't know at this point.

Not sure how @peachypetite knows you are 13 weeks, if the sonographer told you you were 13+2

NoParticularPattern · 16/11/2020 11:21

I’ve had it every time. I guess sonographers just have a default (like mine would be she because I have girls) and use whichever that happens to be. They can’t tell at that stage with a reasonable degree of accuracy anyway.

peachypetite · 16/11/2020 11:22

Hmm 13+2 - as in not the 20 week scan.

NoParticularPattern · 16/11/2020 11:24

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion I read it that @peachypetitesaying is saying the OP is only 13 weeks so they can’t tell, rather than them correcting the sonographer and the OP Hmm 13+2 is still 13 weeks is it not?

PlanBea · 16/11/2020 11:37

I heard sonographers tend to use "he" for baby to distinguish from "she" for mum, and I'm sure a lot of people would be uncomfortable with "it".

I'm using "he" for the moment (15 weeks so don't know yet) because I don't like "it" and when I said "they" people thought I was having twins. So "he" he/she is!

QueenBlueberries · 16/11/2020 11:42

Sonographers have to look for the sex of the baby from a specific angle. They can't see the sex of the baby just by looking from the top angle as in your prints. Even then it's not always obvious, or 100% accurate. Anyway as others have said, at 13 weeks the genitals are still developing inside the body so impossible to tell.

JuliaJohnston · 16/11/2020 11:52

As pp have said, they all use he. Don't read anything into it!

ZombieAttack · 16/11/2020 12:03

Mine said ‘she’, I had a boy.

SanFrancisco49er · 16/11/2020 12:06

I was sure I was having a boy but at the 12 week scan, the sonographer said 'she' but in such a way it did seem like a slip of the tongue. My family all thought girl too.
Had a private scan at 16 weeks which said boy and my 20 week scan did too so I think the sonographer prob just used 'she' as her standard!

CoalCraft · 16/11/2020 12:10

It's just because it seems cold to call a baby "it" - the sonographer wouldn't be able to tell confidently at 13 weeks anyway.

sarahc336 · 16/11/2020 12:45

A lot of people will just pick using he or she, for example my current midwife knows I'm gs I g a surprise but constantly says he. Plus they can't fully tell at the 12 week scan the sex. They'll just use that term instead of having to use "it" Smile
