Travelling with a 3/4 month old?

Hi everyone. I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with our first and am due on 6th April. My partner is from Portugal and his best friend is getting married there at the end of July next year. The plan was for both of us to go and turn it into a 2 week holiday (this was actually supposed to be this year but got cancelled).

Now I am not sure what to do- he says he will go on his own but would only be for around 3 days. Or we could all go together and it would also be a good way for his family to meet the baby as well? I have no idea what it would be like to travel with a 3 or 4 month old (depending on when I actually give birth). Does anyone have any advice/experience with this?

Thank you!

A small baby is very portable, I'd do it.

I went skiing with my 6 week old. Took a pushchair and a sling. Travelling was easy as she slept. Took lots of clothes, milk, nappies. We had lots of family with us so took it in turns to look after the children. Far easier when they are that age than older and won't sit in the seat on the plane for take off!!

We have a wedding abroad shortly before our due date. In my case it is only a few days so we won't be able to make it but anything over 2 months I would definitely do. By 3/4 months you are going to want to be out and about as normal anyway.

Went on a 12 hour flight with my then 7 month old. She didn't sleep but was super easy to entertain and travel worth in general (she was weird about sleep until I stopped bf-ing and went down to one nap at 15 months).

Her lack of mobility was a huge bonus. She's now 20 months and I'd think long and hard about doing it again anytime soon!!! She's great, just everywhere!!! And totally a creature of habit...

Perfect age. Very portable and no need to worry about whether there’s food that they’ll eat whilst there. Small enough to be comfortable on the flight holding them and young enough that there’s no chance of them just wanting to crawl/ walk around the plane!

We took DC1 at three months and it was ideal. So much easier than when a bit older. I’d go for it.

One thing to consider when travelling with a young baby is how you plan on feeding them. Breastfeeding isn't an issue but formula feeding takes a little more forward planning on planes as you might want to factor in delays, how much formula you will need, sterile bottles etc

I’d much rather travel with a 4 month old than a toddler! Go for it 😊

We took our son away at 3,6,8 and 12 months, 3 months was by far the easiest and most enjoyable time!

sophi1207 · 16/11/2020 12:29

Thank you everyone! You have all made me feel a lot more confident about it 😊 I was worrying that our baby wouldn’t be able to meet the other half of their family until much later.

I’d defiantly go. Babies that age are just like a large handbag! Travelling with a toddler or crawling baby is much harder work.

Disappointedkoala · 16/11/2020 13:44

Go! They're portable but need a fair bit of luggage. A crawling baby was much harder than a non mover or a walk in my experience!

NewMumOrpington · 16/11/2020 15:28

That's pretty much an ideal age for a first trip away. It will also give you something to look forward to Smile

INeedNewShoes · 16/11/2020 15:33

They're more portable at this age than any other!

They stay put and their needs are simple (clean, dry, warm, fed, cuddles).

It becomes a much more interesting game once they're walking and have strong ideas about how things should be.

Up until 6 months or so, babies are v easy to travel with, especially for a relatively short distance. We took DD on a long haul flight at 8 weeks then again at 13 months. The first flight was a doddle - she was in our arms or the little carry cot thing the whole way. The second was a nightmare and we swore to each other that we wouldn't take her again until she was at least 2 and old enough for her own seat. Possibly even older. I took her when she was almost 3 on my own and that was fine, even though she was still in nappies.
