Pregnancy insomnia

Any tips?

22 weeks pregnant and wake in the night needing the loo then cannot fall back to sleep for love nor money. Despite how shattered I am. Don't remember this with previous pregnancy but it's driving me demented because I'm shattered all day as a result.

Today was 3:30 and despite laying quietly for an hour I'm still wide awake.

Can anyone offer any advice on falling back to sleep???

I listened to podcasts for hours during my pregnancy. Find something sufficiently boring that you can rest and hopefully fall asleep, but not too boring so your mind doesn't wander.

Also, if it gets really bad, GP can prescribe promethazine which is a hard one antihistamine and knocks you out.

stripey1 · 16/11/2020 05:41

I've had similar from early pregnancy, waking at 1-3am, awake up to 4-5 hours. Seems to have got better recently (sleeping through until 5 or so), at 24 weeks and after handing over a lot of work I was covering. I think darker mornings, sickness tablets and reduced stressors helped me. Not that I felt recognisably stressed at the time. To cope I would try and relax and enjoy the time awake, stressing about it doesn't help. Also drink more fluids in day and less in evening/night. I know it's frustrating especially when it makes you tired/struggling in the day, Hope you sleep better soon.

28 weeks and wide awake for no reason too. No tips unfortunately but solidarity Smile

OneStepOneStumble · 16/11/2020 06:10

17 weeks and been awake since 5, not as bad as 3 I'll give you but far from my normal and feeling shattered anyway. Pregnancy symptoms have a lot to answer for 😩

Ickli · 16/11/2020 07:22

Sadly no tips but watching for ideas.
Since I hit second trimester my insomnia has been awful. I'll wake up at about 1am. Normally I can fall asleep again after that one but then I wake up about every 1-1.5 hours. If I'm lucky I will go back to sleep in about 15 mins but often I'll be awake for hours.

Checking in! Need to wee every night, sometimes twice without fail, cant sleep after 2 or 3 and my hips are killing. The first pregnancy was so polite in comparison. CakeBrew for everyone who needs them.

MaverickDanger · 16/11/2020 07:29

Yep! I’m averaging 3-4 wees a night & just can’t get comfortable.

I’ve taken to sleeping in the spare room as I really feel for DH when I’m tossing and turning. I think I’ve averaged about 4 hours’ sleep each night for the past few weeks, except one magical night that I just passed out for 10 hours.

I’m shattered in the day though, but no time to sleep as I have a very full on job and don’t have time for a lunch break.

Only silver lining is hopefully not long of this to go - 35+6 today.

theantsgomarchin · 16/11/2020 15:18

THANK GOD ITS NOT JUST ME

Not that I'm taking joy in others misery or anything....

Ok. Maybe I am.

It's not even as though I wake up for no reason, it's needing a bloody wee that does it. Then by the time you're up, gone for a wee and back in bed you're wide awake. And I can't get back to sleep for HOURS, and not for lack of trying let me tell you. Luckily DH sleeps like the dead so I can roll around to my hearts content and at least I don't feel guilty for waking him.

I need to try drinking less in the evenings @stripey1 you're definitely right. But does anyone else just feel thirsty all the time?? Again - don't remember this with last baby.

Oh god @MaverickDanger hopefully not long to go then! Luckily I have an 18m old who consistently naps for 2.5 hours every day, which I used to use as a chance to do the housework etc but that can BUGGER OFF. I use it as nap time myself now and I do not even feel guilty for it.

If anyone does ever find a magic cure for it, you point them in my direction.

I find having a nice warm bath later in the evening and a chamomile tea before bed really helps! I also put my hypnobirthing tape on through headphones if I can’t get back to sleep after waking up. I’ve had pregnancy insomnia since about 19 weeks, now I’m at 37 so sadly still suffering

Doughnut100 · 16/11/2020 15:42

I'm losing my mind. My whole face aches with tiredness. Can't get back to sleep after weeing at 4am, takes me hours to get off in the first place. Then there's no silence in the day, I'm such a light sleeper and live in a tiny 1bed flat with dp going in and out and whenever I get the rare chance to nap the upstairs neighbour puts his music on. I'm a bit worried I'm going to snap and kill him with a hammer.

I find cyclizine makes me very drowsy but actually makes me feel sicker. I got a half decent nights sleep using it the other night but then it made me throw up all over myself in the shower in the morning. Plus it makes me feel like I've been run over. So on balance it wasn't worth it.

Solidarity to you all.

MaverickDanger · 16/11/2020 17:42

I absolutely said fuck it today at work, and took 1.5 hours to nap at lunch. I’ve then logged off at 5.30 so I can actually have an evening.

They can’t really say much now I’ve only got 8 days left at work!

I’m going to try bath, book and hypnobirthing tape tonight, as well as trying to actually be asleep before DH comes to bed!

theantsgomarchin · 17/11/2020 07:36

5:40 for me today, not the worst. Woke up earlier than that but forced myself not to even open my eyes and not go to the loo, and I must've gone back off.

How did everyone else do?

Doughnut100 · 17/11/2020 08:12

Went to bed with DP at 10pm, had been so exhausted all day I thought I've nailed this tonight, I'll get loads of sleep before I wake up at 5. And then I couldn't get to sleep until 1. Woke up at 6 when dp got up for work. 😐

MaverickDanger · 17/11/2020 10:17

I crashed at about 10 and then had about 3-4 toilet trips between 11.30 & 7. Managed to get back to sleep fairly quickly so seeing it as a decent night sleep.

This happened last week - I had one good night sleep and the rest of the week was a shambles!

husbandcallsmepickle · 17/11/2020 10:24

Up at midnight for a wee then actually slept through until 6am. Felt pretty good about that as my sleep has been bad recently for absolutely no reason other than being 26 weeks pregnant.

Doughnut100 · 17/11/2020 10:45

@MaverickDanger fair play to you! When I was working in the office I always wished there was somewhere to nap at lunch... today I am not even wfh I have no zoom meetings so I am wfb 😂

theantsgomarchin · 18/11/2020 10:13

Girls got of girls

Woke at 5 for a pee. Laid back in bed, next thing I knew it was SEVEN OCLOCK and the toddler was shouting for me.

WIN

I am pretty sure pregnancy is partly for the creating of a baby, and partly for the creating of a mum, like learning how to cope with lack of sleep! I got to sleep at midnight, woke up at 2am, got back to sleep around 6, and was up with my alarm at 7.45. I'm only at 15 weeks and the thought of having this for the next 25 weeks then having a baby not sleeping makes me want to cry!

I have no advice, I'm just here for a complain!

theantsgomarchin · 18/11/2020 11:12

No you're right @PlanBea - pregnancy is almost easing you in gently to the sleep deprivation you're about to ensure 🤣

That does sound like a rough night to be fair. Are you working from home at the moment so can sneak in a cheeky lunch nap?

My best advice for any FTM is to have a routine. It saved my sanity with DS as I knew when I was absolutely WIPED OUT that he would be going down for a nap in X many hours and then I could close my eyes for a minute. We were lucky with DS that he was a fantastic sleeper, but I think that's because he was in a good routine from 10 weeks (even though I ALWAYS said I would never ever be a routine mum - that was until the baby arrived and I couldn't function on the hourly wakeups through the night).

I don’t know how I’d be surviving right now if I wasn’t working from home!

I’ve got today off so going to nap and binge watch crap TV. Only 5 more working days to go before mat leave starts, that’s getting me through!

PlanBea · 18/11/2020 15:43

@theantsgomarchin I am working from home and have had a few cases of an afternoon nap (putting a sofa in my home office was one of my best ideas of 2020). I'm unfortunately constantly in work calls most of this week which makes napping harder! I've got a couple of days off next week so hoping to make the most of it. Hope you're feeling more human today after a reasonable night of sleep!
