Probiotics that Aren't Horse Tablets?! Help!

Hello! Long time lurker but first time poster (mostly because nobody knows I'm pregnant yet so MN has been great for answering my daft questions).

I'd considered trying probiotics before becoming pregnant (for chronic thrush, constipation) and my midwife says it's safe for me to still give them a go. I know lots of folk on here are unsure about them but I've done my research and figure it can't do any harm to give them a whirl! I can feel my old problems coming back already and I'm only 10 weeks Confused. Fun fun!

But my problem is they all look bloody massive and I'm not very good at swallowing tablets. Can anyone recommend slim ones (or perhaps even chewable ones) that are safe during pregnancy? Lots of Googling and I still can't find any... Perhaps they don't even need to be ones specifically for pregnancy, was reading some older threads where expectant mums were continuing to use the capsules they'd been taking before.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated Smile

I should say, I'm not a massive yoghurt fan so would prefer tablets or gummies.

Can't you get probiotic powder? I'd give that a google

midnightstar66 · 15/11/2020 14:59

Oh and Holland and Barrett have chewable strawberry flavour ones. They are suitable for kids so might not be very high potency but you could take more than 1

Thanks @midnightstar66, great idea! Didn't think of kids probiotics, I'm such a wuss when it comes to tablets.

I take Optibac probiotic tablets, they are a bit smaller than a paracetamol capsule. Would that size be ok for you to swallow?

HomesUnderTheSpanner · 16/11/2020 17:51

I get these: www.mifarma.co.uk/profaes4-dual-vit-30-sticks

They're a tasty strawberry flavoured powder.

jcurve · 16/11/2020 17:54

Optibac are quite small capsules as said above. Or try Cytoplan powder - it’s an offensive vanilla flavour.

Thanks for the help ladies! That's very helpful @jcurve and @tofuschnitzel - I had heard good things about Optibac but was put off because there was no mention of their size on the website (and some sites show you how big they are, against a ruler). I can just about manage to take painkillers etc if I drink a lot of water with them so maybe I could manage though.

Can I ask which Optibacs you both use, as there seems to be a lot of different kinds? Is it the specific prenatal ones or just their everyday ones?

I just take the every day ones (blue packet) but they do have a version that’s specifically for women’s vaginal health.

el108 · 16/11/2020 21:49

I've taken OptiBac before but took Biokult at the start of my pregnancy - they're smaller than optibac and a very good quality. I hate taking tablets too!

tofuschnitzel · 19/11/2020 08:58

I take the every day Optibac probiotic tablets. If you find you are not able to swallow the tablets, they look easy to break and you could always try adding the powder to food or drink.

tofuschnitzel · 19/11/2020 20:00

I hope this helps, OP!

You can open up the capsules and sprinkle the powder inside into food eg a yogurt.

I take optibac tablets, but I've taken biokult in the past which are smaller than optibac
