Pregnancy migraines

Hi everyone

I am 8w 5d pregnant, I usually suffer from migraines before pregnancy but would get them once every 3 months if that. Now I have been getting recurrent migraines for 3 days in a row. This is my 6th migraine since being pregnant. I'm in agony and all I can do when I have them is stay a dark room, in bed and try sleep.

Has anyone experienced this?
Did it stop after the first trimester? What did you do to help or prevent them?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated xxx

I had one or two severe migraines during first trimester.
The hyperemesis alongside them didn’t help.
My midwife suggested paracetamol via suppository as I kept vomiting.
In my case I was dehydrated and that made it even worse.
I would suggest you drink fluids as much as you can even if you resort to less ‘healthy’ drinks. E.g. I had a limited amount of Diet Coke or sugary lemonade as it was all I could face.
When the pain isn’t so severe try and get some fresh air such as a short walk.
Hope you feel better soon

Oh and yes I don’t recall having any after the first trimester.
And for the first year or two after both my babies I was lucky in that I had very few. Not sure if that was connected to breastfeeding or other hormone related reason...

@onepieceoflollipop

Thank you so much for your advice, Fingers and toes crossed they no longer continue after first trimester! Xx

Morning,
I second this, I suffer from migraines usually too and the first trimester was a nightmare for me. All I could do was take paracetamol (though that didn't seem to help much), use one of those sticks you roll on your forehead and then sleep in a dark room.
However, since reaching my second trimester, I've had none so far (currently 21 weeks), so fingers crossed its the same for you.
I also had a consultation with a specialist about the migraine medications and they said that there is not enough research to determine whether they're safe or not through pregnancy so that it would be up to me if I wanted to take them. I made the decision not to take them unless I literally felt I had no other choice and luckily I've not needed to make that decision as of yet.
Hope you start to feel a bit better soon - not far off your second trimester!

Do any of you who’s migraines got better after 12 weeks, suffer with aura? I’m 10 weeks, struggling something awful with 2 a week at least and it’s affecting my whole life. Google just brings terror about aura migraine continued in pregnancy 😞

Jessiebells · 05/06/2021 15:14

Hi @Neleh91 I get an aura when I get migraines, I'm happy to say they stopped after first trimester! I had non in second trimester and now I am at the end of the third trimester I had one a couple days ago. Hope they stop soon!! Wishing you all the best x

I often get migraines though haven't had very many since finding out I'm pregnant. I had a few at the start, though not really terrible ones (I sometimes get them so badly that it makes me begin to think that death is preferable). What ended up working for me was wearing a gum shield at night. It doesn't get rid of them but reduces them. I got it from a private dentist for 60 quid.

While pregnant, the only thing I can do is steam regularly and lie in a dark room. The steaming has sometimes helped before. With paracetamol, I might as well not be taking anything at all because it's so useless.

That’s so good to hear, thank you. I’m currently in bed, with my 4th one within a week and a half. It’s just miserable. I lost a pregnancy in feb so this baby is so wanted but I’m really struggling to enjoy being pregnant when I’m constantly worried about the migraines. They come on so quick it makes me worried to go anywhere myself or drive anywhere alone. Really praying they ease off after 12 weeks like yourself 🤞 I can deal with the constant nausea and being sick but the migraines just make me very low mentally! Very stressed. Thanks again for replying ❤️

@Neleh91 I get migraines with aura outside pregnancy once or twice a year (strangely usually spring then autumn) but I had 3 migraines in a single week at 7 weeks pregnant and thought it was never going to stop. I've had none so far since and it's been a good few weeks 🤞 I've read they are more common in the first trimester when the hormones peak. Horrible combination with the already low appetite, tiredness and nausea that comes with the first trimester!

MGee123 · 05/06/2021 16:08

I get an aura with my migraines and usually have a couple a year. I was having 2-3 a week throughout the first trimester but since my sickness stopped around 14 weeks, I haven't had a migraine either. Seems like they are very much hormone related. Hope yours settle soon.

Jessiebells · 05/06/2021 18:00

@Neleh91 oh you poor thing! I remember feeling that worry too, my friend said to me "maybe it's a sticky bean because it's ramping up your hormones and making you feel so poorly" that was comforting to hear it put that way!! Fingers and toes crossed they stop soon! Rest up xx

Update so I haven’t had any in 3 weeks until tonight! 😞 14 weeks now.. hoping they’re going to ease all together now. I’m scared to do anywhere else myself because when I get can’t see and I’m Instantly sick.

NameChanged15729 · 25/06/2021 21:43

I was considering starting a thread on this and then poof, there’s already one here.

I’m 9 weeks and I’ve been suffering with a lot of headaches since finding out I’m pregnant but this week has been horrific. A constant, relentless headache all week that then turned into a migraine where I couldn’t keep anything down. I accidentally grabbed the wrong painkillers and took ibuprofen which I’ve been panicking about. It’s eased off a bit now but it’s done this a few times before coming back and I’m so worried about the constant pain. I’m really struggling with it.

Jessiebells · 25/06/2021 22:09

@NameChanged15729

I'm so sorry to hear you have been suffering with headaches and migraines. I resorted to having physio on my neck and shoulders which did help if you want to try that but ultimately they stopped not long after 12 weeks. They horrible so hope they stop soon for you! As for wrong pain killers I can't say much about that but could contact your gp or midwife to make sure ok, drink plenty of water, hoping for the end of the horrible things for you soon!! Xx

My dr said ibuprofen is ok up to 20week so don’t stress about a one off. I avoid it anyway but he did say I could take that for the headaches. They also prescribed tramadol but I try not to take it.. just doesn’t feel right! It’s no fun but I’m hoping this passes soon for us all x

Neleh91 · 14/09/2021 16:38

I’m 25 weeks now, after first trimester migraine hell, I had one at around 14 weeks and one today..still a pest but better than before so trying to stay positive. How’s everyone else getting on?
