Ok so in my first pregnancy three years ago I had my daughter at 30 weeks due to preeclampsia. I am now 24 weeks with my second child and am on 150mg aspirin per day to try and prevent premature birth. But at least twice a week I get very heavy nosebleeds that last at least an hour. The blood just pours down my nose when I release the tissue to change it.....sometimes I am panicking so much and getting ready to run to the hospital if I doesn’t stop. Has anyone had bad nosebleeds when taking aspirin and any advice on what to do when they come?

I’m on aspirin, same dosage and nosebleeds are frequent here too.

My consultants and midwives have all said it’s normal for pregnancy and the aspirin will just had to the amount because it thins our blood. My midwife said I could come off the aspirin but the benefits of the adoption outweigh the troubles baby and me could be in if I came off it.

I carry round a toilet roll and baby wipes to mop up any blood

Do your nosebleeds last up to an hour also? I’m just finding it very hard to stop it any quicker than that and it gets very scary.

I always take it just after breakfast every morning so it’s a full stomach. I try to keep my nose pinched for at least 10 minutes before changing the tissue. But when I go to change it I can feel the blood quickly pouring down my nose before I apply the next tissue. My GP knows about this but my consultant at the hospital doesn’t know yet because I haven’t been there in a few weeks and the nosebleeds weren’t an issue then. I am not back to him until 3 more weeks but I am considering making an earlier appointment so that I can tell him my concerns and see if he can do anything for me. I don’t want to have to stop the aspirin because I’m only 24 weeks and I don’t want to risk having another premature birth. I just want to know how to lessen the time for the nosebleeds. Then I would be able to deal with it better.

@Powercharger if you bleed heavy for an hour then you need to speak to someone about it. Call your consultant and get their opinion

You need to discuss this with a doctor. Call your consultant’s secretary first thing on Monday and tell them that it is urgent.

@Seychelles98 it is always just the right nostril that bleeds. I have no idea why...I have tried placing something cold on the bridge of my nose while I keep pressure on it as I have heard it can help with closing the blood vessels...

No nosebleed should last that long. Are you sure you're managing it correctly? You need to tip your head back and pinch just above the nostrils very hard. You're effectively trying to stop air flow through the nose and should be breathing through the mouth.

This also sounds bizarre but a nurse taught me this trick years ago as I've always suffered from nosebleeds... you or your partner needs to punch the arch of either of your bare feet quite hard a couple of times. This should stop the flow within a couple of minutes.

Do NOT tip your head back! That is old outdated advice and can be dangerous. Pinching at the bridge very hard is the right thing to do. I have suffered from chronic nosebleeds most my life, they stopped after I had my nose cauterized but have started again in pregnancy. Mine are not asprin related though so no advice regarding that sorry, just wanted to reiterate not to tip the head back. Google nosebleeds in pregnancy and there is an NHS help page in how to deal with them.

I was always told if they lasted longer than 30 mins.m to get medical attention so I agree with pp who said speak to your doctor about it on Monday

Yes, apologies, I meant tip head forward and squeeze.
