I’m going to be a mum at 39. I don’t think I’m being “mean”

I hate posts like this.

Sanch1 · 12/11/2020 10:33

Huh? I'm nearly 39 and will be by the time this baby arrives. How am I being mean?

helloxhristmas · 12/11/2020 10:33

How would it be mean?

Stargazer87 · 12/11/2020 10:34

Why would it be mean? I think that's a very strange thing to say....Lots of women have children later these days and it's no big deal, I think it's becoming more of the norm if anything!

metalkprettyoneday · 12/11/2020 10:35

I don’t get it? Does your diabetes mean something to do with your age?

Wilfy101 · 12/11/2020 10:37

Hi, my mum had me at 37 and my sister at 39, we had a fantastic childhood and a great relationship. She always jokes she can't believe we made it through her menopause! Mums always been hands on with all the grandchildren but does admit she feels guilty she can't be as hands on as she'd like because of her health, she's now 72.
However, there's nothing to say anyone is going to have bad health, it's unpredictable.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/11/2020 10:37

No, becoming a Mom at 39 or 40 isn't "mean".
Yes you're less likely to see their 60th birthday but there's no reason you won't see them into adulthood, marriage etc.

If you don't want to be an older parent then that's ok too bit no op, all of those who had to do it late for whatever reason aren't awful selfish people

I’ll be 39 when this sprog arrives and I know I’ll be a million times better a mother than I would have been at 29 (know this does not apply to anyone but it certainly applies to me. Would def have been mean to a child to land me as a 29 year old mother!)

justanotherneighinparadise · 12/11/2020 10:40

If you are a type 2 diabetic then this is reversible on a low carb/Keto diet.

gg12346 · 12/11/2020 10:41

Well , this thread is about me not relating or commenting on mums who are late mothers .Being diabetic I think I would not be able to live longer and so I think I the way I have put it .Nothing else

I feel the same.

You should probably get the thread title changed then. It’s currently quite inflammatory and insulting.
SleepingStandingUp · 12/11/2020 10:43

Well I think it all depends what you think your life expectancy will be, what does their late stages mean? High school, early adulthood, their retirement?

gg12346 · 12/11/2020 10:57

Thank you everyone I have asked mumsnet to delete the message .dont mean to be insulting to anyone

Type 1 diabetes? I suppose it depends how well controlled you are and how well you keep? But no reason to think you’ll not live a long life, you can help that with lifestyle choices etc too but i know some T1 can be difficult to control.

Being a new mother however is your choice, my friend is the same age as me (41) her no3 son is the same age as mine (10) she’s 50 and an energetic, involved and fab mum health is good and also has 3 other kids 2 older and one younger and works whilst kids are at school I think she’s more tired recently but it’s been a stressful time.

Anyway it’s not mean odd choice of words, hopefully it’ll happen if that’s what you’re plans are
