Hello all,

I’ve recently been diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 37 weeks due to polyhydramnios and big baby. I’m being induced at 39 weeks. I am so so worried as it’s likely I’ve had it a couple of months. My baby has been measuring along the 50th centile throughout and from 34 weeks suddenly started measuring on the 95th. I’ve been monitoring my blood sugar for 3 days now and out of 12 readings I’ve only had one “normal” all the rest are around 9 or 10. Anyone else had readings this high and what was the outcome?

I would try not to worry as by this stage there isn’t a lot you can do, how is your diet?

i got diagnosed at 28 weeks and tried to control by diet, had to cut out all carbs apart from a small amount of rice, anything else would spike my levels and then had to go metformin which didn’t work and then insulin and by 32 weeks i was on the highest dose of insulin and my sugar levels were still crazy. From what i can remember my levels would be 10+ sometimes.

I had a healthy gorgeous baby who was 7lbs and no issues and arrived at 37 weeks and I was due to get induced at 38.

Wish you all the best. Look after yourself and try not to worry as that won’t help.

@Pinkiii thank you so much you have made me feel a lot better. My diet is actually good mostly. I’ve found that my blood sugar isn’t too bad with rice but really shoots up with bread so I’ve cut that out. I’ve been put on metformin twice a day so fingers crossed it starts working soon! Thank you again!

Hi
Please don’t worry , I had gestational diabetes with my second daughter 8 year ago . My daily readings were always high and was induced at 39 weeks as I was told she would be big.
She was 6lb 2oz born at 39 weeks !!!
I’m now 32 weeks pregnant with my third child but I have been type 2 diabetic for the last few years . I am on insulin and metformin as my levels are high and have been told baby I’s very big . I have growth scans every two weeks and I will be induced early .
I will not be allowed to go past 38 weeks .

I was worried when I had gestational diabetes but when I look back it was fine and need big have worried at all.

Good luck you will be absolutely fine .

I’m 36weeks and was diagnosed with GD at 28weeks after GTT. Fasting level was 4.7 but after the drink 9.3. I tested and fasting levels always been fine but after meals some were classed as high mainly in high 6s a couple low 7s and a couple mid 8s. I was put on metaformin and then at 34weeks it was upped as some readings still in high 6s.

I made some changes like brown bread instead of white, sweet potato instead of usual potato and just cut anything with processed sugar and if now want anything sweet just have a low cal jelly or a sugar free biscuit.

I’m being induced if baby dies by arrive by 39weeks but as a precaution as my baby on 10th centile so they don’t want weight to drop or placenta to fail. I’m a small build though so I’m not worried about baby being on the smaller side.

Try not to worry too much, most women with GD go on to have perfectly healthy babies and their predictions of a big baby are not always accurate.

I completely understand how you're feeling though, that was me 7 weeks ago. I had a late diagnosis of GD 2 days before I gave birth at 38 weeks. My DS was 7.2lbs. My SIL also had it with both her pregnancies and neither were big.

Thank you so much everyone. You really have made me feel so much better honestly! I am so grateful and hopefully tonight I’ll be able to have a good nights sleep Grin

I would contact your diabetic midwife for advice. I'm type 1 and have to keep my sugars super tight. It's not just big babies which is the concern.

Pcosandpregnant · 13/11/2020 00:41

@DiabeticFirstBaby I completely agree. I couldn’t care less if the baby came out 10 stone! I just want them to be happy and healthy. Today my blood sugar readings have been really good so I’m guessing the metformin has started to work so I’m feeling a lot better. Unfortunately I have had no help or advice due to Covid. I wasn’t aware I had it until I got a phone call asking me to pick up the blood sugar monitor and I was just handed that and a leaflet in the waiting room. It was a huge shock as I was supposed to be monitored throughout due to be being high risk and all my consultant appointments were cancelled up until 35 weeks which was when it was picked up that I had polyhydramnios and a baby measuring big. Unfortunately I think I have slipped through the net Sad

That is awful @Pcosandpregnant It must be super scary to be told you have GD and give you no help or advice. Glad your sugars are settling, I would find some help if you have continuous high results though.
I have to say that as an established diabetic i have had great care, regular calls with my diabetes team and my own diabetes midwife. It's hard for me with many years knowledge of blood sugars etc so can't imagine how you are feeling. Sounds like you are nearly ready to meet your baby so not long to go!! Good luck xx

Pcosandpregnant · 13/11/2020 11:31

It has been so scary. I’ve gone through thinking I’m fine and going for ice cream, eating chocolate etc and I can’t stop thinking about the what ifs. I’m glad you are receiving support! It must be scary for you also. I am nearly there only 2 weeks left! I just hope it goes quickly. Good luck to you also and thank you xx
