Hi
So I’ve been prescribed 150mg of aspirin. I need to take two tablets of 75mg a day. He told me this is to help the blood flow from the placenta to the baby.
I’m 22, and this is my first baby, my blood pressure and blood tests are all perfectly fine; and I’ve been hearing it can do more harm than good. I’ve also heard people get prescribed this if they’ve had miscarriages before of issues with their blood..
so just wondering, should I take this or not?

Do you know why its been prescribed for you?

3rdtimelucky2019 · 11/11/2020 16:01

Is there history of pre eclampsia in the family? That can be a reason.

I took aspirin until 26 weeks with my little boy with no issues. If it's been prescribed then there's a reason for it.

3rdtimelucky2019 · 11/11/2020 16:02

As in the aspirin caused me no issues. I was prescribed as my mother's final pregnancy had pre eclampsia.

LittleRa · 11/11/2020 16:02

Do you have Low Papp-A? I have Low Papp-A, a low reading of a particular protein in my blood sample which can indicate I’m more likely to develop high blood pressure in pregnancy (pre-eclampsia) and for this I’ve been prescribed 150mg aspirin daily. It’s a low dose really. If you have concerns, chat to your midwife but if you’ve been prescribed it, why wouldn’t you take it?

Mylittlesandwich · 11/11/2020 16:03

I was prescribed aspirin for high BMI. Took it until I think 26 weeks. No issues with my lovely healthy big boy.

Amjk · 11/11/2020 16:04

@dementedpixie
No, he just said he recommends taking it as it would help with the blood flow from placenta to baby, and prevent pre eclampsia.
I read that it could be to do with a BMI of 35 or more, and my BMI is 35 so that might be why

@3rdtimelucky2019
No history of it that I’m aware of but thanks, it’s nice to know other people’s experiences with it.

@LittleRa
no I don’t have low Papp-A.
Yeah my boyfriend said if it’s been prescribed I should just take it, just wanted to check. Thanks!

@Mylittlesandwich

@Amjk Good luck with your pregnancy Smile

MariaDingbat · 11/11/2020 16:16

I'm on 75mg aspirin per day from week 26 to delivery and had a BMI of 35 at booking. It's precautionary and quite a small dose so I wouldn't worry.

Amjk · 11/11/2020 16:18

@LittleRa
Thank you :)

@MariaDingbat
Hi, thanks! Yeah I got 75mg but have to take it twice a day.
Must just be because of the BMI then. And he also wrote in my maternity notes another reason is because it’s my first baby.
Thanks for your help

Another one here for asprin due to bmi, to be honest i just blindly took it and didnt research anything Blush

Yummymummy2020 · 11/11/2020 16:22

I was on asprin for pre eclampsia with my first and from early on, it didn’t seem to cause us any trouble! Discuss it further with your midwife if you need to though to put your mind at ease.

Amjk · 11/11/2020 16:23

@Bb90
Yeah I just wanted to make sure.
First baby, and I’m only 22 I don’t have any family I can ask for advice so wanted to see if anyone has any experience with it.
Thanks :)

I took aspirin with my first child and am now on it again due to mild blood clotting. The doctors and midwives I've spoken to over the years have said they now highly encourage it in many pregnancies as latest research has proven it is highly effective in reducing risk of miscarriages.

KinderWild · 12/11/2020 07:21

Hi - I also took 150mg/day of aspirin with my son (3 MCs before him due to blood clotting issues) and he was born very healthy. I am on it again for this pregnancy. Have been taking it from BFP and will be until 36 weeks. My understanding is that negative effects from aspirin are only when high doses are taken e.g 300mg/day consistently.
My sister has a bmi of over 35 and has just had a healthy baby, she was on 150mg aspirin because of her bmi from 12 weeks. I believe 150mg is prescribed as standard now to women with any pre eclampsia risk factors.
(I have been told to stop the aspirin at 36 weeks due to the risk of bleeding if i have a c section. It may be worth asking your consultant about this).

KinderWild · 12/11/2020 07:22

This link sets out the medical rationale of when 150 of aspirin is prescribed

FelicityPike · 12/11/2020 07:25

I took it too but it was because my BP was out of control!
You wouldn’t have been prescribed it if they didn’t think you and baby would benefit from it.
