Hi everyone, first time poster here!

I'm 7 and a half weeks pregnant with my first baby and this week the food aversions have really kicked in. I'm really struggling to find anything to eat that appeals to me and doesn't make me want to throw up! I'm normally okay by dinner time and can eat my dinner, but breakfast, lunch and snacks are a real problem! I've already noticed that I've lost a little weight from not eating and I'm also feeling even more weak and tired throughout the day from not eating enough and obviously I don't want that as I want to be as healthy as possible for my baby. Just wondered what foods you can recommend? :)

Horrible isn’t it. I lived off bananas and cheese sandwiches on white bread. I remember at 11 weeks I managed to eat a roast dinner, I was so happy & felt fine after that! Fizzy drinks might help settle your stomach Smile

madeinthe80z · 11/11/2020 15:21

I was the opposite and could eat breakfast and lunch but couldn't face anything by dinner time.

The only things I could consistently eat were fruit and salad. I lost a lot of weight which was great as I needed to! Don't worry about forcing yourself, but maybe try and have some high calorie items (full fat yoghurt, whole milk, nuts maybe?) Your body will still do what it needs to do if you aren't eating huge amounts at this stage.

Eat whatever you can, when you can. And don't listen to anyone who criticises you for not getting enough vitamins! I was surviving for a while on toast with olive oil and salt, plain or salt n vinegar crisps, and ginger biscuits. Do try to stay hydrated. When I can't stomach water, tonic or fizzy water seems to go down better, no idea why.

MummyOfZog · 11/11/2020 15:34

I'm 10 weeks and just about getting some ability to eat other things again. But for the past 6 weeks I've basically lived on cheese on toast, plain bagels with a tiny scrape of butter and mash potato. Absolutely terrible diet really as only carbs but I couldn't (still can't!) even begin to consider eating fruit, vegetables etc. I'm still struggling to find stuff I can drink though and spend most days dehydrated despite trying my hardest.

Between weeks 6-9 I lived off chocolate digestives and toast. Sometimes yogurts, I lost 10lbs but trust me it’s starting to go back on now at 15 weeks.

Baby will take what it needs from you so try and not worry.

Amjk · 11/11/2020 16:18

I was the same! I never had any sickness though thank god! (I’m 22 weeks now and have only thrown up once)
So I would just force myself to eat. I preferred fresh home cooked meals. For breakfast I’d have cereal or toast. I’d try and eat a lot of fruit, banana, watermelon.
I did lose weight at first, but now I’ve put it all back on. When I was around 17/18 weeks my appetite came back.

Illy603 · 11/11/2020 16:26

I’ve lost 5lb now because of food aversions 😓 I find fruit most appealing, especially satsumas, apples and kiwi, sometimes it’s all I can stomach all day. I managed a bagel with cream cheese yesterday which was a nice change. I also swear by ice lollies for the nausea!!

BefuddledPerson · 11/11/2020 16:29

I had a phase of only cheese sarnies and oranges.

Just eat whatever you can face, whenever you can.

It shouldn't cause issues if it passes quickly. Speak to midwife if it doesn't improve.

Nat4392 · 11/11/2020 16:45

Im 11 weeks and still off most food! Everything makes me retch! The only things I can regularly tolerate are fruit and freezing cold fizzy drinks. Just eat what you can, when you can. Baby is still feeding off the yolk sac at 7 weeks

PinkPlantCase · 11/11/2020 16:48

I really liked bland/salty foods. Chicken nuggets and crumpets were winners for me. And cream crackers to snack on to try and stop my stomach being too empty.

PinkPlantCase · 11/11/2020 16:49

Also I’m 10 weeks today and starting to feel much less sicky!! Hope it won’t last long for you x

Sexnotgender · 11/11/2020 16:50

Bread, crisps, cheese, biscuits... that was pretty much my diet for the first 12 weeks!

It’ll pass. It’s shit right now though, I’m 18 weeks and it’s mostly passed.

Herbertzlinger · 11/11/2020 16:50

My local tesco did pots of fresh sliced mango with a wedge of lime and it was the only thing I could face in the first few weeks

Skyla01 · 11/11/2020 16:54

I bought pregnacare pregnancy supplements during 1st trimester so I didn't have to worry to much if I only ate cheese on toast for days. It's pricey but meant I didn't worry about vitamins.

lifeinlimbo2020 · 11/11/2020 16:54

I loved a toasted teacake with a bit of butter on when I felt like that.

JoeBidenIsGreat · 11/11/2020 16:56

You have to experiment, sorry.
I went lactose intolerant in all my pregnancies, but that didn't get better at dinner time.
Whatever stays down is probably fine.

AriesTheRam · 11/11/2020 16:57

Ready salted walkers, mini cheddars and tinned hotdogs

Shayisgreat · 11/11/2020 16:58

I used to eat crackers with butter and sometimes digestives with butter. Plain pasta with butter also worked. I sometimes ate plain rice. Couldn't stand anything with sauces or strong flavour. My major aversion was mushrooms. I couldn't eat if DH had mushrooms on his plate!

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/11/2020 16:59

Eat whatever you fancy, or can manage. I only ate beige, salty carbs for weeks - my low point was salt and vinegar crisps dipped in a ready meal lasgne. The best meal I had was baked potatoes with gravy - I remember being so happy because it was exactly what I needed!

BigRedBoat · 11/11/2020 17:00

I had a massive aversion to vegetables 🙈 dry carby foods went down well - salty crackers, cake, toast, biscuits etc. Eating little and often can be helpful as well if you can't face a big meal.

ShinyGreenElephant · 11/11/2020 17:00

I usually live off crisps, nuts and super noodles in the first trimester, sometimes toast as well. Hopefully you'll be okay by about 11-12 weeks and the weight starts going back on - unless you're very underweight its nothing to worry about. Congratulations!

SpectralPlot · 11/11/2020 17:24

Nausea is really difficult isn't it. I'd suggest simple stuff like dry toast or with very little butter/spread. Simple biscuits like Rich Tea to nibble on. Ginger really helped me too, so ginger snaps/tea or the actual root (I was that desperate I went out and bought raw ginger)...

Basically simple foods that aren't too buttery/fatty etc.

Good luck OP.

SpectralPlot · 11/11/2020 17:26

Also ice-lollies helped my nausea, not the right time of year really for you but you can still buy them.

CosyQueen · 11/11/2020 17:37

For me all I could eat my entire pregnancy (I had HG so was lucky to eat anything) was watermelon, raspberries, mango, cucumber, rice mixed with mayonnaise, plain pasta mixed with butter, chunks of mild cheddar, McDonald’s chicken nuggets with ketchup and ice cold fizzy drink - especially sprite.

MaverickDanger · 11/11/2020 17:39

I just ate carbs and fruit for weeks.

Rich tea biscuits, salt and vinegar crisps, carrots, cucumber, Braeburn apples and mango was my diet solidly for weeks.

I’m 35 weeks pregnant now and still not a huge fan of meat or dairy, although I have added a few more things into the list above!
