Huge bleed but baby is OK - 9+4 weeks

Hello all, I was just wondering if anyone had had a similar experience and may be able to help me with what is going on? I had a private scan on Friday at 9 weeks and everything was brilliant, saw them kicking away. It's an Ivf pregnancy, and this was the first time I've really felt myself relax and my anxiety drop. Then on Monday afternoon I suddenly had a feeling that I was weeing myself. I went to the toilet and I was absolutely gushing blood and very large clots (sorry I know it's disgusting), but with no pain. Obviously I thiught I was having a miscarriage, and my gp sent me to A&E. I got sent through to the epau and was eventually scanned, only to find that the baby was still there and everything looked fine. There were three doctors present during the scan and they all said they had no idea what it was, but the baby was OK, so to go home and I'd probably be fine. The bleeding was extremely heavy, but didn't last very long.
I'm now just feeling incredibly anxious that this is going to happen again, and is just a drawn out experience of losing the baby.

I bled for three and a half weeks in the first tri of my ivf pregnancy, heavily at times and with cramping. Somehow the baby hung on although she was prem and my consultant described my placenta as small and poor at her delivery. So I think my body tried to evict her but she clung on. I'd already miscarried one ivf pregnancy so I didn't believe it could possibly turn out ok.

Hang on in there. I know this is a rough time.

Thanks so much, it's so nice to hear a happy outcome. I really appreciate it

I didn’t even realise I was pregnant as bleeding resembled period

Boomclaps · 11/11/2020 13:54

And that was for 4 days every 3 weeks. I’ve god 3 month old dd snoring in my arms as I type

nolitetebastardescarborundo · 11/11/2020 13:57

Oh that's lovely! Did they ever tell you what was the cause? Or is it more of a case of if the baby seems OK they don't really investigate?

I had that in first and second trimesters with one pregnancy. Absolutely terrifying and so much blood that I was admitted overnight once when it wouldn’t stop. Never found out what it was, baby was born at 40 weeks fine and healthy 🤷‍♀️

Bubbinsmakesthree · 11/11/2020 13:59

Not me but a friend had significant bleeding like you and assumed it was a miscarriage, but all was fine and she now has a healthy toddler.

It must be a very anxious time and you must have been beside yourself when you had to go to A&E fearing the worst. But these kind of bleeds can and do happen without it having any implications for the pregnancy.

Trousersareoverrated · 11/11/2020 14:00

There is a lovely thread on here where a poster on her last chance at IVF had a massive bleed with lemon sized clots and assumed the worst- the thread lasts all the way through to the safe delivery of her little boy.

I know it is a horrible anxious time. Take one day at a time. I’ve got everything crossed for you.

picosandsancerre · 11/11/2020 14:05

I had a mass bleed at 11 weeks and baby was fine. I was convinced I had a miscarriage. They couldnt work out what it was but it was likely a ruptuted artery in the placenta as at a later scan I was found to only have one and ended up having extra scans throughout. Baby was fine and is now 6

nolitetebastardescarborundo · 11/11/2020 14:06

Thank you so so much for all of your lovely replies. I've never posted on a forum before, but it's so difficult to talk about as none of my friends have experienced anything like this, plus covid! I really appreciate it, it's made me feel 100 x better. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again and I can just chalk it up to a really horrible experience best forgotten about

I bleed massively with ds2, so much I had to have a transfusion, I had no idea a baby could survive that kind of bleeding. My boy was prem but otherwise fine (for reasons not connected to the bleeding)
Sending you good wishes.

nolitetebastardescarborundo · 11/11/2020 14:27

Thanks so much. I'm so glad to hear you and your son are both OK. It is so terrifying to see that much blood, but I guess the body can be a very weird and amazing thing

I had this at 13 weeks. They said it was a subchorionic haematoma, it had resolved itself by my 20 week scan and DD is now 8.
Sorry this has happened to you, it's so scary Thanks

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 11/11/2020 14:50

I bled very heavily with clots at 16 weeks with my first child. I was scanned and all fine. It continued for three weeks, and there were clots now and then too. It stopped as suddenly as it started.
Ds is 7 now.
My advice to you op is take it easy, some say it won't make a difference but I believe it does. I'm sure you'll be fine.

GanderousGoose · 11/11/2020 14:57

I had a massive early bleed with DS14. Everything was ok.

ClaireP20 · 11/11/2020 15:07

YES!! This exact same thing happened to me - I had bright red blood and I was convinced I was miscarrying - I had clots like jelly, and so I went straight to bed and sobbed my heart out. I went to a & e the next day ( I was so convinced I had just miscarried that I didn't even rush in, having miscarriages before I knew they could do nothing). I put my legs slightly raised and did not move at all until the next, unless I wanted to go to the toilet, which was traumatic in itself as you can imagine. But the baby stayed! and I could not believe it especially because I'm an older mum in my 40s! Then I bled a little every day until I was around 11 weeks. Are you still taking progesterone? (Ivf) because I took mine twice a day (pessaries) until I was 16 weeks.... by the way I'm cuddling my very healthy baby while I type this! X BUT PLEASE TAKE IT EASY.... if ever there was a time for you to lay down flat it is now. Even though people say a miscarriage cannot be helped, I am of the camp that you must take it very easy. Xx

Ismellphantoms · 11/11/2020 15:09

My friend had such a bad bleed that she was taken to hospital by ambulance. She lost so much blood and clots that she didn't get a scan and was told it was over. A few weeks later I mentioned to her how big her tummy was. She went to see the GP and the baby was growing big and healthy. She was in shock.

Mysa74 · 11/11/2020 15:10

I had a massive bleed at 10 weeks op. I was at work and felt a massive gush and ran to the bathroom. I suffer my underwear with loo roll and checked for a trail on my way back to the office to let my boss know I was going to EPU. Mine was a subchorionic haematoma too, the bright red blood faded to brown or brown red spots every now and then for a week or so and drs could see where it had been at an extra checkup scan, baby is 4 now. I'm very pleased to say it's not always bad news. Congratulations OP

steppemum · 11/11/2020 15:12

Not IVF but my first pregnancy I had a strong bleed at 8 weeks ish, and had ot have a scan. baby fine.
he is now a strapping 18 year old!

I think it is quite common actually.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 11/11/2020 15:22

I had this at 7 weeks. The person doing my scan had pushed do hard on my stomach that she caused a haematoma. Half the womb looked like a giant blood clot! I went on bed rest because it was so big and it resolved by about 16 weeks I think. That baby is now 20 years old!
Take it easy and rest as much as you can until it resolves x

Ickli · 11/11/2020 17:10

I had 5 very heavy bleeds with some clots in my first trimester. The first happened when we thought I was 5 weeks and the EPU just told me by phone I'd have miscarried. I bleed again a week later, got admitted to hospital (weekend, they thought it might be ectopic), had a scan and found a healthy 9w baby. I had 3 more bleeds after that, the last the day before my 12w scan. All was fine in that scan so I'm hoping all still is (16w at the moment). In my scans they spotted an area of bleed but no explanation beyond that. Since the start of my second trimester I haven't bled and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Hope it all works out ok for you.

nolitetebastardescarborundo · 11/11/2020 17:10

Wow I never expected so many replies from people saying they had experienced the same thing! I'm sorry you had to go through it but I am feeling very reassured, thank you. I am still taking progesterone and I'm meeting my midwife for the first time tomorrow, so hopefully she will be able to go through it with me a bit too. Really can't thank you all enough, I'll take it easy and fingers crossed I will get the same outcome as so many of you.

All the best OP, glad we could help xxx

My mum had this at 20 weeks with me and I am typing this as a 30 something year old woman who is pregnant herself Smile. Wishing you all the best

shivbo2014 · 12/11/2020 11:12

I bled at 11 weeks and they said it was a subchronic hemetoma. Baby was absolutely fine.
