Blighted Ovum/Miscarriage Advice

Hi all,

I just wanted some advice, it was confirmed Monday I am having a blighted ovum miscarriage. Should be 9 weeks, sac is measuring 7, never been anything further than the egg sac. No fetal pole. We are obviously devastated.

My body began painful cramps and bleeding which has become heavier last Wednesday so its been a week of constant bleeding. I definitely haven't passed the sac yet as the scan on Monday confirmed it's still in there. I'm just wondering how much longer it will be before I do? And when I do will it be noticeably more painful/heavy? Basically will I be able to tell I've passed it?

I just want the experience over with really and then I'm back on the road to recovery physically and mentally.

So sorry to read all your stories, it's absolutely heartbreaking to see so many women go through this.

Thank you,

G

I had a blighted ovum found at 8 weeks in march. I was rescanned a week later to confirm and opted for medical management. It took about 10 weeks for me to pass everything. Still had a positive test after 8 weeks. Very frustrating time but after the first medical management failed I just opted to wait. No option for surgical due to covid. Cant recall passing a sac I just bled on and off for 8-10 weeks. Im back to 28 day cycles now but opted to hold off trying again until next year. Sorry for your loss.

I'm really sorry. My first pregnancy was a blighted ovum and I hadn't even heard of it.

In my case I started bleeding like a period. Three days later I had waves of cramping and passed something resembling a sack. Then the bleeding subsided over a number of days. I was lucky as everything passed away relatively easily. I didn't take any tablets etc to induce it.

With my second MMC, I took the tablet option and passed a sack like structure again but had retained products and had an ERPC. Only way to know that everything has passed is with a scan. It might be worth asking if you can have a rescan after a certain number of days.

Take care of yourself. It's so bloody hard.

I’m sorry to read this. My first pregnancy ended in a blighted ovum earlier this year. I also started bleeding naturally. After about ten days of bleeding I began to bleed very heavily and painfully, with bouts of severe cramping, over another week or so. On two occasions over that week I passed major major clots, and on the second occasion something which I am sure was the sac came with them. The cramps completely stopped as soon it passed. I then bled pretty painlessly for another couple of weeks. It does seem to take a long time to totally tail off.

I started taking well woman vitamins when it seemed to be coming to an end and I did feel better quite soon. I took a pregnancy test after the bleeding seemed to have finally stopped which was negative, and I got my period again as normal within about a month.

I hope you feel better soon. I found a hot water bottle slightly helpful during the worst of the cramps, painkillers of any description didn’t touch them.

@GG2707 sorry about your news. I found out I had a blighted ovum at 7 weeks. I did start bleeding naturally and it was quite heavy. Another 2 weeks later I had a scan and the sac was still there. So I needed medical management, and I passed the sac after this. I was around 11 weeks. I actually didn’t have any pain. 3 weeks later I had a negative pregnancy tests.
I was being seen by the fertility clinic, and they didn’t want me to wait too long for the sac to pass, due to risk of infection. You could speak to EPU for advice on medical managment, if you wanted to. It did work quickly for me.
Good luck.

Sorry to hear you are going through this.

I have just gone through the same thing. I had my harmony test booked in at 11+3 (30th Sep) and it was a blighted ovum. We had to wait until the 7th Oct to see the NHS EPAU and they confirmed. The sac was measuring at 8/9 weeks.

I opted for the medical management and had some intense pain and bleeding for less than 24 hours. I called the EPAU and they agreed to rescan me on the 13th Oct, as I knew the sac had not passed. Luckily, on the 12th I passed something and it was the sac. At the scan, they confirmed this but said there was retained products and I was to test on the 28th (3 weeks after tablets). I tested and it was positive.

I then went back on the 4th Nov and they took my blood, confirming a very low HCG which they will see as negative. I was so worried as I had not bled since the 12th Oct and the concerns of infection were upsetting.

Thankfully yesterday, my period came and I have never felt so relieved. I have been told that the retained product will likely come away with the period.

This was my first pregnancy and it has hurt us very deeply but we take comfort knowing that it was natures way, as something was not right. It is just a tragic twist, that it is missed and you have to find out at the scan.

Sending you all my well wishes.

Sorry for your loss @GG2707

I had a blighted ovum discovered in May, I was rescanned 10 days later and had the tablets as I’d had no bleeding. I was still testing positive 3 weeks later so had an ERPC for retained products. I seemed to ovulate a couple of weeks later but I still had a positive test so ended up with another ERPC in July.

I thought that would be that and we could start trying again but I was admitted to hospital with a severe infection in my tube. Finally after 18 weeks AF arrived last week.

I went through so many emotions and frustrations and was dreading the December due date approaching as for me AF was full closure to an horrific and lonely experience. I questioned whether I had Ashermans from the operations. It drove me stir crazy.

I’m now feeling a lot less stressed and more relaxed. I’m not going to OPK or test early but I have bought Ovusense to have a relaxed tracking approach to TTC.

Xx
