Would you have the COVID vaccine while pregnant?

I know this is very pie in the sky and not very likely... but say a COVID vaccine was approved during your pregnancy and was deemed safe for pregnant women, would you have it? Why/why not?

Not trying to start arguments, I’m just genuinely curious. I am 10 weeks and was asked this question today, and I don’t know what I would choose.

PinkDaffodil2 · 10/11/2020 16:50

I think I would after the first trimester - given the risks of COVID in the third trimester. I would avoid probably if in the first 8-10 weeks as there probably won’t be enough data and that’s a much more delicate stage of development.

Blueberries0112 · 10/11/2020 16:53

I thought I would share how the vaccine works: www.fastcompany.com/90573488/how-pfizers-covid-19-vaccine-works-mrna

CoalCraft · 10/11/2020 16:53

As long as it had been deemed safe during pregnancy, of course I would.

ArtfulScreamer · 10/11/2020 16:56

I'm 7+4 and I'm not an anti vaxer but I don't think I would, I think it's to new and I think about thalidomide in the 60s. I've not done any research or really read much about it so I'm ignorant at this stage but that's my first instinct.

Fruitloops34 · 10/11/2020 17:03

Not a chance. No ifs or buts.

Aprilbaby21 · 10/11/2020 17:04

I dont think i would

Twizbe · 10/11/2020 17:06

If it was proved safe then yes. I had the flu jab and whooping cough jab while pregnant. Why wouldn't I have this one.

NightOwl19 · 10/11/2020 17:07

I wouldn't, we just don't no enough about it and the long term effects

SunnySideUp2020 · 10/11/2020 17:07

Nope.

Pinktruffle · 10/11/2020 17:09

I am very pro vaccine and will be having this vaccine as soon as I'm allowed to have it, but I wouldnt currently have it whilst pregnant due to not knowing much about the effects. If things are going well with the vaccine in 2 years time and I was pregnant at the time, yes I would have it.

Ahorsecalledseptember · 10/11/2020 17:09

No, I had the whooping cough but declined the flu. Having vaccinations is sensible but it doesn’t mean we have to have every single one that is on offer, just because they are there. I haven’t had a malaria or yellow fever vaccination either.

Parkandride · 10/11/2020 17:11

Yes it it was approved, as I am with flu jab and whooping cough

The issues with thalidomide are exactly why there are such strict controls around medicine now

Mumof3almost4 · 10/11/2020 17:15

No chance would I have a brand new injection whilst pregnant. Not enough research or evidence of effects.
Am pro vaccination otherwise, I did have flu and whooping cough ones

Blueberries0112 · 10/11/2020 17:16

As someone who is Negative RH blood type and learned your antibiotics can attack your baby, I am curious about this vaccine and if it is safe

Blueberries0112 · 10/11/2020 17:17

Antibodies

DinosaurGrrrrr · 10/11/2020 17:17

I don’t even have the flu vaccine in pregnancy (Whooping cough yes, I’m not anti-vax or anything), if you are healthy and catch the flu/covid in pregnancy the chances are vv high there will be no ill effects at all, who knows I might have already had covid in pregnancy. It feels unnecessary and I’m really not into the idea of receiving a new vaccine generally, never mind in pregnancy. If I was 80 and the risks were high I’m sure I’d be more inclined to have it though.

titchy · 10/11/2020 17:18

No. It won't have been tested on pregnant women, and drugs are only known to be safe for pregnant women when enough have taken the drug, then found they were pregnant, and the results reported to the drug company. There isn't enough time for that data to be collected so it can't be deemed safe even if it almost certainly is safe.

I have a friend who caught flu while pregnant. She was about 10 weeks when she was ill. At the 20 week scan they realised that the baby's brain had stopped growing at 10/11 weeks as a result of her flu.

She lost her baby boy shortly after.

Get the flu jab.

With the covid jab, OP said that if it was proved safe and approved for use in pregnancy.

Floopyandtired · 10/11/2020 17:21

It’s really interesting reading both sides of the argument. I am pro-vaccination totally, but would probably have some reservations about this one. I’d need to read up more thoroughly and make an informed decision.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 10/11/2020 17:22

Not a chance! How on earth can they have proved its safe to a foetus already?

Fruitloops34 · 10/11/2020 17:26

@Twizbe I have a friend who had the swine flu vaccine and it ate away at her placenta and her baby died. Don’t try and force your view on someone else. We all know someone who has been affected one way or another.

I think things are often presented in a very black-and-white sort of format on here.

In reality, diseases and illnesses carry a risk. These risks are often minimal to a healthy adult.

Vaccinations also carry a risk. These risks tend to be very rare and adverse effects from vaccinations are unusual. But they do happen.

To me, it is common sense to weigh up the risks of both and proceed accordingly. Hence why I had whooping cough and not flu.

Sexnotgender · 10/11/2020 17:30

Probably not. I’m 18 weeks pregnant and I don’t think I would have such a new vaccine.

I’ve had my flu vaccine and will have whooping cough at my next appointment. Not anti vaccine by any stretch of the imagination.

Luckyelephant1 · 10/11/2020 17:31

I am very much pro vax but I just don't think I would get the COVID vaccine so early after release while pregnant. In a couple of years, definitely.

Seasonal flu and swine flu jabs are different things.

I was talking about seasonal flu which a lot of people don't feel is a serious illness.

I'm sorry for your friend.
