Can you leak amniotic fluid? Is it normal?

Morning ladies,
Just looking for a bit of advise.
I have thought over the last couple days my bump has gotten smaller, DH and DM agreed. Bump looks lower so just put it down to baby changing position.
Anyway, gone to have my morning wee and there was quite a big wet patch in my underwear. I have had quite allot of discharge during pregnancy, but it less ‘wet’ than this (sorry for the TMI) which made me think it wasn’t that and I’m pretty sure I didn’t wee.
I am just over 30 weeks, first pregnancy.
Any help would be much appreciated :)

My waters started to leak at 30 weeks. I was on bed rest until dc's lungs were developed enough for him to come out. I was given antibiotics and steroids to help his lungs develop. PLEASE Please see your midwife. They can give you a ferning or other test to detect amniotic fluid. it smells like sperm by the way, or so my nurse told me.

I remember I went dancing around this time and leaked a lot. I was really panicked at the time but all was fine in the end but I would get it checked out if worried or just phone midwife for a chat.

If you think your bump is smaller and you may be leaking fluid you should phone your assessment unit number at the hospital or 24hr helpline number and get checked out. Your community midwife won't do anything except tell you to do the same and may take 24/48 hrs to get back to you.

LittleGungHo · 10/11/2020 07:50

Please call the midwife just to check everything is ok

ReindeersAreBetterThanHumans · 10/11/2020 07:51

You need to call the number on the front of your notes, pop a pad in so you can show the midwives when you get to the day unit x

whatswithtodaytoday · 10/11/2020 07:53

Yes, you can, and it needs attention now. Put a maternity pad in (not sanitary towel, they're too absorbant!) so the midwife can check it, and call the hospital to find out what they want you to do.

It might just be discharge or wee, but if it's amniotic fluid it's a problem.

PatchworkElmer · 10/11/2020 07:54

Call your midwife! Hope all is ok.

I leaked with both of mine. I felt it pooling when I laid down. Wasnt believed with either of them and both times told it was thrush. But both times they mysteriously changed their minds last minute and induced me. Two different hospitals

Ukholidaysaregreat · 10/11/2020 07:59

I leaked amniotic fluid and was ignored at hospital. Later in my notes it wasn't even mentioned. Confused I was too preoccupied with the new baby and a 2 year old to take it up with them. Ring the Triage unit, should have a number on your notes. Don't be afraid to put your thoughts forward. Try and rest up at home in the mean time. Xxx

I called and they didn’t seem overly concerned... maybe I caught a tired midwife coming off the night shift...
Anyway, she said to put a pad on (all I have is pant liners and I thought ahead and put one one) and to call back at 10.
I felt like she was instantly dismissive so I didn’t get the chance to say my bump felt smaller... what a div I am 😕 I’ll have to mention that at 10 when I call back... Had the pad in for maybe an hour and it’s not wet, and have had some discharge onto it, but no more fluid.. we shall see I suppose!

Call the midwife unit- I had wet patches for a couple of days and thought it was just discharge so ignored but it was my waters - they went dramatically about 48 hrs afterwards and I got a bollocking from the midwife for not coming in to be checked when it first happened. During lockdown so I wasn't keen to go in for no reason.

Baby then had to have obs when born as a result (all fine of course)

Oneandabean · 10/11/2020 09:55

If it’s your waters it will be continuous, so if you haven’t had any more it’s more likely to be wee or discharge. The bump can go smaller if baby moves into a different position.

minipie · 10/11/2020 09:58

You definitely need to be checked out. Keep any pads with the fluid in, they will be able to test it. Please insist on being checked.

Also not true that leaks are always continuous, they can come and go depending on what position the baby is in (a small leak can be blocked if baby moves low etc).

ScatteredMama82 · 10/11/2020 10:01

Get checked OP. I had similar at about 24 weeks. They did a swab test and it was amniotic fluid. Had steroid injections and was kept in for a couple of days. It all stopped so I went home again and everything was fine, he was born at 40+2. They were sufficiently concerned though, and discussed moving me to a different hospital as it looked like Special Care Baby Unit was full, so it was obviously something they take very seriously.

nevertrustaherdofcows · 10/11/2020 10:02

What mimipies said - this was my experience.

SkylinesTurnstiles · 10/11/2020 10:07

So nothing more this morning in terms or lots of fluid apart from some discharge on liner (noticeably different from whatever this morning was)...
When I rang back at 10 I did mention that bump feeling smaller and triage said it’s because baby has moved.
I was just told to keep an eye on movements and to call if they change put they are putting wet down to discharge or urine.
Thankfully have a day off work today so just gonna have a bath, chill out and put a pad on incase. Hopefully no more leaks... 🤞

I've just remembered being told amniotic fluid has a very obvious smell - like semen Grin So have a sniff if it happens again. Hopefully you'll be ok.

I was constantly damp throughout my last week's of pregnancy, but I was checked and it wasn't fluid.

Nimsay1 · 10/11/2020 16:55

Don't let them fob you off. I went in saying I thought I'd leaked fluids at around 34 weeks and they told me I was probably fine and sent me home. A few weeks later at routine appointment I was measuring very small, sent for scan and i'd lost 95% of fluid. Was sent for immediate induction.

It could be nothing but keep a liner on and keep an eye on it. If you're worried again, push to be measured.
