To buy new clothes post partum?

I'm wondering when to consider buying new clothes post partum. Im carrying a little more weight than lre pregnancy. Currently 3 weeks after having my baby and my maternity clothes are too big but my old clothes are too small. Having nothing to wear is affecting my mood but I'm not sure whether its worth picking up a few bits now, when my body could still be changing, or whether to hold out a few more weeks.

Just wondering what others have done if like me you were carrying a little extra after you baby arrived. At what point did your body settle into a new normal?

I havent been through a pregnancy yet but as long as you can afford it I'd buy some nice basics to see you through! They estimate about a year to heal totally and get back to normal

I got some bigger jeans and lots of baggy jumpers to take me through the first post baby winter. I wore my maternity feeding vests under them.

I'm almost 2 years post partum and I still wear some maternity gear

I'm around 20lb heavier than my pre pregnancy weight and I'm currently living in my leggings and some lovely baggy tops and jumper dresses to hide the extra weight.
I don't want to spend money on clothes that I won't be in, in 3 months time, but that's just me.
If I'm not in leggings I'm in sweats. I'm 6 weeks post partum

The best thing I did was go and buy a load of new jeans / leggings cos I finally felt like me once I was out of the maternity stuff (but was a lot more of 'me' for a good 8 months after giving birth Grin).

I wish I'd done it sooner as I agonised for ages, not wanting to spend the money, buy in the end I got some great bargains that I wore loads until I didn't need them anymore.

Buy new clothes that fit and make you feel good.

I was a size 10 in jeans before ds and even when I was back down at pre pregnancy weight my hips were wider and I could never fit back into my old jeans. My rib cage also permanently expanded.

I put on 4 stone with each baby so it’s been a long slog each time back to ‘normal’ and stomach area while much better, still isn’t quite right. So I went on a few second hand shopping splurges each time I went down a dress size. Then when each one was too big I redonated back to the charity shop. Felt it was a win win for me and them, stopped me getting too bored ( and I HATE my mat clothes) and they made a sale, and then got the clothes back Smile

Last time I picked up some new bits at about 6-8 weeks, I was definitely still shrinking back at 3 weeks (looking at the photos now I was really puffy). I brought some new jeans and a few new tops - I went back to the same size but was definitely wider.

Do it. It’s hard enough having a newborn, without trying to shoehorn yourself into clothes that probably won’t fit for a little while yet. They will eventually, but in my case it took until I’d almost completely stopped breastfeeding for the baby weight to come off - whether because of hormones, the feeding hunger or just having less time and freedom to exercise I don’t know. It did come off in time, but there’s no point putting pressure on yourself. Get some new bits that fit properly and you’ll feel so much happier. Do some eBaying for secondhand stuff, perhaps, then you won’t spend so much.

I seem to have a permanently larger bust and smaller bum (not welcome on either count) and was in larger sizes than before for ages.

JoJoSM2 · 09/11/2020 07:50

I picked up a whole capsule wardrobe when I was 8-9 months pregnant. By some miracle, it all fitted. It wasn’t all that practical, though, as I’d been a very smart dresser and my idea of ‘casual’ dressing on mat leave was a lot of tailored pieces.

Anyway, in your shoes I’d just buy a few things now to lift my mood. I’d probably try clothes that are a bit stretchy or loose-fitting so if/when you lose weight, they’ll still fit.

megletthesecond · 09/11/2020 08:33

I did.
I had a couple.of pairs of jeans and tops from Primark. Nothing fancy but it took me from the post CS recovery to about 6 months when my normal clothes started fitting again.

I would try and wait until 6 weeks; I found that things settled at that point whereas at 3 weeks I was still losing all the excess fluid and my tummy was still going down. I found maternity leggings still fitted and wore them for quite a while with my more roomy dresses and while at home I wore a lot of long cardigans with leggings and a vest top.

Marybird · 09/11/2020 15:30

I definitely did! I bought things that I’d want to wear again when I’d lost weight, like shirts and loose light knit jumpers to cover my ‘bump’!. I think it’s worth the investment, I also found that I wore those things in the early stages of the next pregnancy so if you’re planning on another baby one day, don’t throw them when you’re back to normal. I gave birth nearly 7 weeks ago. I found I was still deflating at 3 weeks so I waited until 5 weeks before I brought new clothes. I am pretty much down to what I was before but needed new clothes anyway.

AudHvamm · 09/11/2020 18:16

Yes! I wanted some nice clothes to wear and was so sick of most of my maternity clothes by the end! Like other pps I’ve shopped secondhand for tops with buttons (for breastfeeding) and loose trousers in styles I couldn’t wear during pregnancy. I don’t expect to be back to pre-pregnancy weight for a while, if ever, but will all fit if and when I am.

I’ve also gone for some improbably lux fabrics like silk knit cardigans and velvet trousers. Not very practical, but they were inexpensive being second hand and make me feel great!
