Low lying placenta

Hi, anyone got the same problem as me...that is a low lying placenta. It's apparently lying under the baby and covering my cervix. Hopefully it will move out of the way in the next 12weeks for me to have a nomal delivery. Anyone ever heard about or had this? Does it move out of the way like the midwives say it might? Really not kean on a c.section

Hi pinkelephant, mine moved and I had a completely natural birth. My Sis had the same with her DS2 and had some light bleeding but could have had a VB as well although she elected to have a CS for other reasons.
It is very common and most move up as the baby grows.

there are 4 grade of PP , 2 of which require an automatic c.s, and 1 that will allow a VB and one that allows VB , with potential for some bleeding... so you need to try to find out which grade it is.. and there is still time

if it is covering part or all of the internal os of the cervix, then a c,s is the way to go

more often than not , they do move

hey pink elephant, me too, found out at 20 week scan...

I have another scan at 34 weeks to check if it has moved so sounds like we're in same boat! I'm 28+5 now so not too long to go, the scan is on 21st Nov... will let you know how it goes!

How many weeks are you?

Try not to be too worried, think it's fairly common and they often move so we could be fine! I'm not too keen on a c/s either, but have resigned myself to doing whatever is best for me and the baby, and if that's what has to happen I'll try and focus on the plus points!!

Do you have another scan at around 34 weeks. You should have. Most low lying placentas move - I think it's something like 1 in 10 that don't.

Just be prepared though, if it hasn't moved and is still covering the cervix at 34 weeks you may be admitted to hospital immediately for the remainder of your pregnancy due to the risk of severe bleeding.

Hi, Pink elephant, I have this too - found out at the 20 week scan and due a re-scan on Friday, when I will be 34 weeks. Am feeling positive that it will have moved - have not had any pain/ bleeding/ other complications, but will let you know what happens as not long to wait now! I'm not keen on c section either as have circulatory problem that may cause complications with an anaesthetic - don't know for sure tho as I've never had one (anasthetic, c section or baby! New to all this!) Good luck.

Thanks for all your words of wisdom ladies .I also found out at my 20wk scan. I'm not worried really, but just want to have as "normal" birth as possible....I know a lot of people would prefer a c.section but I would prefer not to if at all possible (must be the nurse in me). I'm 28wks this week and so far am ok, I have another scan at 36wks to see whats happening with the placenta. Good to hear its only 1 in 10 that don't move...so its sounding good. Either way I'll do whatever it takes for baby to be ok

hey we must be due at almost the same time!

I really don't want a cs either, but guess we'll have to wait and see...

I've only had one panic so far, a slight bleed last week, was told to go in to hospital and had checks... baby was kicking like crazy and his heart was merrily thumping away so think all was fine, and the bleed was only short and minimal phew!

Was really rather freaky sitting with my fella in the delivery suite though... made everything seem scarily real and could hear someone giving birth nearby was a little bit scary...

spookyspice · 16/10/2007 20:17

Mine moved up at 34 wks.

i had one right across the cervix (grade iv) at 20 weeks and it staid put the entire time. had an elective CS at 36 weeks which was lucky as it looked like i was in very searly stages of labour on the day.

i had no bleeding at all, even had sex up until a few days before (which is something you must never do with a grade iv)

i did find my local nhs hospital a bit lax on it as it took them 9 weeks from 20 week scan to be able to discuss it with a consultant. i went private after that.

the royal college of obstitricians and gynacologists has a couple of articles on it for patients and consultants which are a must read. i found the folowwing paper had some interesting (and scary) stats on percentage of bleeds.

you will hopefully be lucky and it will move but make them do another scan well beofre 36 weeks to check on this if its right across the cervix as these ones are the least likely to move!
