Outpatient induction?

Hi everyone,

Im a FTM, 41 weeks and booked in for an induction today at 11am, they are going to insert a pessary and then send me back home to do most of my labouring at home and then to come back in when needed.

Has anyone had this recently and can share their experiences, what to expect etc? Im really anxious more so about the baby. Ive already had two sweeps and they told me I was 1cm dilated last week and she could have broken my waters there and then.

Thanks all!

I’ve read about them but not had one. I am being induced tomorrow as i’m high risk i have to stay in once they start the process until i’ve had the baby. Then i have to stay for at least 24 hours for baby to pass her blood sugars

I was induced on the Monday and a pessary was put in a few hours after I arrived. It can be quite a long process so be prepared for that. So it feels similar to a sweep, maybe not as bad and is done quickly you can't feel it in. And then you just wait, hopefully your contractions will start soon after and continue until it puts you into labour. My first pessary did nothing more than cause me twinges so I had another one in the evening. This caused them to come on a little more but still barely in labour. Its great that you get to go home because being in the hospital makes it drag soo much, just keep bouncing on your birthing ball if you have one. I also did lots of walking. After my third pessary was also not quite getting me there they broke my waters, not painful just a big gush of fluid which leeks for a while after. Well then I went into labour for sure! When she put me on pitocin I asked her not very politely to rip that thing out of my arm lol as she had me on the lowest dose and I already felt I needed to push. I was in a lot of pain and she didn't want me pushing so she ordered me an epidural, it was heaven! She checked me right after I got my epidural and I was 10cm, I almost felt like saying see you didn't belive me did you? Epidural didn't slow down my labour and I pushed baby out rather quickly. All said and done I was happy with my birth. Everyone is different, but I can say that through the whole process and it being my first I never felt too scared. It took 3 days to induce me but I wouldn't change it.

With my last baby I had the pessary but had to stay in as I had high bp. I didn’t feel any different for the first couple of hours, it fell out which I assumed was why so I shoved it back in myself and whilst waiting for the midwife to come back to re insert it my contractions started. What I would say is to keep an eye out if they do kick off your contractions as when they did mine they came fast and furious. Of course it’s not the case sometimes and it can be a long process but that’s my experience. I’m glad I was staying in hospital due to how fast it all was!

I’m due soon & asked about being induced as to whether I could have the pessary or gel inserted & then go home & was told no. Apparently I would be classed as an “in patient”.
The midwife did say if I chose the balloon induction I could have that inserted & then go home.

With our first child born 2008, it took 4 pessaries to get the party started. That was a good 48 hours from start to finish.

With our second born, it was 48 hours again. Waters went at home at midnight. Went to hospital and they pretty much kept me in to keep an eye on me as I had lost a lot of waters and baby was measuring small. They gave me two pessaries and then finally the dreaded drip. Which really is awful as it makes your contractions come faster and feels like 10cm one after the other. Was begging for the epidural but anaesthetist was busy and unavailable. Managed on gas and air which was rubbish as the drip is so intense. Finally had her. Worst labour but easy delivery as she was only 5lb3.

Third baby, was labouring all day at home then went in the night to get examined and was 3cm, so stayed in and had the water birth which was excellent. 36 hour labour. But my best yet. Highly recommend water birth. Hoping to have again with my 5th. Am due in January.

4th baby. Contractions started at 2am, things were going very slowly so midwives told me to stay home. Went back in the night and was 4cm dilated planned to have the water birth again. Got in the pool but things slowed right down. Then the midwife suggested breaking my waters to help speed things up. It definitely did. But couldnt back in the birthing pool, as wait for it, midwife had a bad back. So in the end delivered on the bed. Her head was stuck, which made things even worse. But the walk to the toilet and back helped push her back into the birthing canal and delivered within a few pushes.that was a 32 hour labour.

Pessaries do nothing for me. Unless you crammed in 10 at once lol and broke my waters too and do 5 sweeps. I was also dilated 1cn to 2cm for majority of the last 2 weeks and was also in slow labour.

Sex helped speed things up. Did a better job than the pessaries

Our little girl has arrived 💗
Pessary at 12:10pm started labour at 7:00pm, contractions were getting close together, went into delivery suite at 12:00am, went from 4cm to to 9cm within half an hour and little girl was born at 4:18am!!
