Putting newborn straight into a cot bed

Hi guys,

I have a very big room and will be able to place a cot bed next to my bed. I don’t want to buy a moses basket or a crib as baby will grow out of these really quickly. Do you think it’s ok for a newborn to go straight into a cot bed? Will swaddling be useful to help baby settle into cot bed?

I think it’s fine to put them straight into a cot. I have a Moses basket that was given so plan to use that downstairs but we have put cot up in our bedroom and plan to put baby in it straight away. If they were not meant to be used from birth cots would have to come with guidance like some pushchairs do lol

I didn’t use the cot til about 4 months. It was too big and baby didn’t settle. They like to feel they are snug.

See if you can get a Moses basket second hand. I used mine way more than I’d thought. It was handy to have downstairs.

Yes, it’s fine to ho straight into a cot.

There's no reason you can't use a cot bed from birth.
We used a next2me for DD, never had a crib or Moses basket though.
We also used the gro-snug instead of swaddling as baby can have arms tucked in or left out. DD has always been an arms up by her head sleeper so you get the benefit of a cosy baby sleeping bag and swaddling in one

When I had my first I was given a moses basket. He hated the thing and screamed the place down. He settled so much better in the cot. The next 3 went straight to their cots as well.

Swaddling, like the moses basket is like marmite. They either love or hate it.

There's no reason not to but you may find that baby hates it. DS wouldn't sleep in is next to me crib for the first 6 weeks or so because it was too big. He'd only sleep in a Moses basket or the bassinet of the pram (or on someone obviously...)

Some babies like to feel snuggled and cosy. I didn't use the cot bed straight away because they used to wriggle around and 'travel' too much in it and I was afraid they would somehow smother (I hadn't discovered sleeping bags at that stage) I used to put the Moses basket into the cot though so if they fell asleep downstairs I just lifted the Moses basket upstairs and into the cot. You can get dividers now for cot beds so it limits how far they can move down in the bed.

I had both and DS hated the mosis basket. He use to starfish and would wake up if his arms touched anything. We moved to the cot at about 3 weeks and his sleep got much better overnight. DC2 went straight into the cot, as we had got rid of the basket and it didn't seem worth getting a new which might not get used.

Mine went straight into a cot.

bedtimestories · 07/11/2020 11:24

Where will the baby sleep down stairs? I had a moses basket and took moses basket to bed and put in cot bed. I agree with other posters, baby usually feels unsettled in a cot bed from birth

Oneandabean · 07/11/2020 12:48

There’s no reason you can’t go straight into a cot, the only advice is that baby should be in your room.

Hope54321 · 07/11/2020 12:50

Hi bedtimestories, I have a tiny love rocker napper for the living room if required for supervised daytime naps.

Absolutely no reason why not! My newborn would fall asleep absolutely anywhere.
