Dental issues in pregnancy & times of covid

Hi

I’ve had a filling that cracked down the middle for a while now and my dentist told me when it deteriorates further it will need an extraction or crown. Wanted it extracting after he told me that (it is a back molar so I honestly don’t mind the gap it will create) but he fobbed me off... anyway...

Was eating a satsuma with my toddler today (a bloody satsuma) and the filling split leading for it to pop out of its little tooth casing.

Rang my dentist - private, not sure if thats relevant - and they said they couldn’t crown it due to COVID and they wouldn’t extract it whilst I’m pregnant. Just a tad worried that, as far as I know the nerve is still live, and it being an open tooth might lead it to become infected in the time I have until I give birth. Currently 26+1 and the same dentist was reluctant to give me anaesthetic whilst I was breastfeeding previously so it could be a fair old while until I can get it seen to

Has anybody had similar? Or success with those “DIY fillings” that you can buy from the pharmacy?

Luckily it doesn’t hurt so far.

My suggestion to DH that I try pull it out myself was swiftly shot down...

Thank you!

Hi, I'm from a dental background. Has the tooth itself cracked or just the filling? And has this tooth had a root canal treatment done in the past?

Obviously it's hard without me seeing but if it's a smallish filling that has just popped out you may get away with a filling kit from. Boots for now.

But by the sounds of it if your dentist already said it needs a crown or extraction in the past, it's probably a pretty big filling and may need to be dressed and filled properly to avoid the nerve becoming infected. I agree with deferring extraction until after pregnancy and I know some practices may not be doing crowns at the moment. But he at least needs to see you!

Most dental practices are definitely open during this lockdown, it's not like last time. I'd call again or maybe try elsewhere.

I don't have any dental advice, but I managed to get a dental appointment last week (NHS) for something else so I know some surgeries are seeing people.
