Does anyone recommend a 6w ultrasound?

Experiences on a private ultrasound prior to 7 weeks? 6w - 6.5w?

I see no reason against them if you'd like reassurance. That said I'm not sure you can see much. Also, whilst I've had internal ultrasounds before, I'd rather avoid them and have a regular one on the belly.

You barely see anything and if you don't see the heartbeat (as it's so early), you'll send yourself into a tailspin.

2-3 weeks later is a lot more interesting.

Oneandabean · 06/11/2020 16:54

I don’t think it will be reassuring as you won’t see much. Wait until 8 weeks and you’ll see the heartbeat

jdy123 · 06/11/2020 16:56

Tbh it reassured me that things were going in the right direction and I got to see heartbeat at 6 weeks too. If you can hold out maybe try wait till 8 weeks if you can but I just couldn't wait.
I had another scan at 9 weeks and you could see a bit more and was a bit more reassuring xx

Twizbe · 06/11/2020 16:57

It's not a good idea. Main reason being that it could cause lots more stress than reassurance.

At this early stage it's hard to date pregnancy and while you might think your 6 weeks, if the scan says you're not quite there you'll just worry.

Wait until 8/9 weeks when there will be a heartbeat. Even then, wait until the NHS one. I've had early scans due to bleeding and there isn't much to see

Vogue1992 · 06/11/2020 16:59

Thank you for your responses. The anticipation is driving me insane but I’ve also read a lot of people are disappointed and more anxious after a scan so early. Is it possible to see a fetal pole this early?

I had a MMC June 2019, I went for a reassurance scan at 7.5 weeks and there was no fetal pole. I began miscarrying a week later.

I don’t have any symptoms so I wanted it for reassurance but I'm not sure it will give that just wondered what others seen x x

NavyBerry · 06/11/2020 17:05

I'd go for a 7w scan to see the heartbeat. Otherwise it might be too worrying

Isit2021yetplease · 06/11/2020 17:41

I went for one at what I thought was 6 weeks. I only had an empty sac measuring under 5 weeks. I had a horrendous week waiting for a rescan - and then went somewhere else where they found a sac, yolk and baby with a heartbeat. It then measured 6+5 so didn’t even tally with the first measurements. I massively massively regretted going as it made me so unbelievably worried - and it was all fine. I would really really advise waiting u til 7 earliest then worst case you could be 6.5 or something and still see something. I didn’t sleep for about a week!

Mmr224 · 06/11/2020 17:46

I've had early scans as I've had IVF and also had ectopic pregnancies in the past, so early scans were important. You see very little, and the earliest I've been was 6+6 when we did see a heartbeat but dates were exact due to IVF. The 7+5 scan I had was much better, clearer etc.

Shmithecat2 · 06/11/2020 17:48

I had one at 5+4, just so I would actually believe I was pregnant.

borageforager · 06/11/2020 17:50

My friend has had one in both pregnancies to reassure her, both time it was absolutely terrifying because the measurements weren’t right/no heartbeat/etc etc. Both times the pregnancy was absolutely fine, but she had unnecessary stress from the early scans.

butterry · 06/11/2020 17:52

I would wait another week or two, it's a little early. I had an internal scan at 6 weeks and could see heartbeat but it would be better to wait a bit longer if you can.

UnicornAndSparkles · 06/11/2020 17:56

I'd wait until.7 wks to see a heartbeat 💓

Bobblehatwobble · 06/11/2020 18:19

I had one and it was a terrible idea - it causes more stress and worry unnecessarily.

I should’ve waited until my 8w one!

Vogue1992 · 06/11/2020 19:03

I stupidly booked it earlier on but I’m not going to go, I think it’s only going to cause more stress / less reassurance. I already had a scan at 7+3 booked for 19 November so I’m going to hold fire until then x x

LaMadrilena · 06/11/2020 19:20

I had one at 6w due to odd pains (turned out to be UTI) and was lucky, they detected a heartbeat and that the embryo was in the womb not in a fallopian tube, which is what I was worried about. That was all I needed. Remember at that stage the scan is probably transvaginal, in case that might make you uncomfortable.

PolarBearStrength · 06/11/2020 19:24

If I was going to have an early ultrasound, I’d wait until 8 weeks or more personally. 6 weeks is so borderline. If your dates are slightly out or the measurements aren’t quite as expected you could end up panicking massively about nothing.

MuchTooTired · 06/11/2020 19:30

I had one at 6w, but mine was an ivf pregnancy so I knew my dates were exact. I saw two little heartbeats flickering which was terrifying and amazing!

Parkandride · 06/11/2020 19:36

6 weeks as ivf with raised ectopic risk, all was fine and it was reassuring but I personally couldn't see a thing even though I was told there was a heartbeat.
At 7 weeks I could actually see it myself.
At 9 weeks it was a little bean with limbs which was nice

If its a natural pregnancy I'd wait until at least 7 -8 weeks as your dates being out by a couple of days could cause a lot of worry.
Plus that wait to 12 weeks feels forever so its nice to break it up a bit more.

serialreturner · 06/11/2020 19:37

Honestly - I wouldn't.

I had a relatively early scan, they couldn't see anything and I was left to sweat for weeks.

Big deep breath and wait until 10 weeks at least.

Good luck Flowers

37weekswithno2 · 06/11/2020 23:52

I think it's a bit early and could just cause anxiety if they can't see much. Much better to wait til 8 weeks

lc86 · 07/11/2020 23:11

My baby didn't have a heartbeat at our 6 week scan and I was so anxious waiting for another scan at 8 weeks. Am now 36 weeks pregnant with him, but I wish I'd waited a bit longer as was a horrible wait in between x

Poppystars · 07/11/2020 23:12

I would not go for one unless the NHS says it is needed, as I would want to avoid the risk of catching COVID-19

Vogue1992 · 08/11/2020 08:34

Thank you all for your responses, I’ve decided not to go ahead with it as I don’t think it will offer me reassurance, if anything I think it will increase anxiety as it’s only abdominal they offer and so I think they will struggle to see anything. I’m going to stick to my original appointment of 19 November where I’ll be a 3 days off 8 weeks x

AegonT · 08/11/2020 10:31

I went for one at 7 weeks and it was so stressful and caused more worry. The sonographer found I have a retroverted uterus so she couldn't see a pregnancy so asked me to take a Clear Blue weeks indicator test and did an internal scan. She found the pregnancy measured over a week behind but had a heartbeat but also there was a heamatoma. By 10 weeks when I had my Harmony test (privately paid for but done by the NHS) there was no heamatoma. By my 12 week scan my uterus had come forward and my dates were back to what matched my LMP.
