Why did my early scan show me as 6 weeks but the midwife put me at 8?

When I went for my midwife appointment I had had a early scan the week before and the lady said that it looked like I'm 6 weeks but my midwife asked me when my last bleed was and put me at 8, she worked the dates out and it was all right when I would've conceived etc my 12 week scan will be at the end of the month and I'm just worried it won't look as it's supposed to and il be earlier - has anyone else had this?

I’d go with the scan.

Did you tell the sonographer what midwife had said based on your last bleed?

PlanDeRaccordement · 06/11/2020 08:53

I agree, go with the scan. The scan will be more accurate. The last menstrual period method is less accurate and can easily be off by 2weeks especially if you don’t have exactly a 28day cycle and ovulate exactly on day 14.

I would bring it up because you do not want your due date to be set at 38weeks! That will make it very likely that you’ll be induced for being “late” when you are not really. And being marked down as 8 weeks along when you are really 6 weeks along will cause that.

They will use the date from the 12 week scan (dating scan) going forward regardless, that’s standard procedure. I have textbook cycles, was tracking and know exactly when I conceived and the scans all put me 5 days ahead of my dates. So early scan, 5 days ahead, and dating scan, 5 days ahead. That’s the date they’ve used all pregnancy and baby has tracked on that. They use length and of course babies don’t all grow the same or they’d come out all the same size.

It is important you told the sonographer

Was your scan NHS or private? If the latter, your midwife won't take it on board until your official 12 week NHS one- at least in my experience. My (private) 10 week scan moved my due date up by a couple days, which wasn't officially changed until my 12 week scan found the exact same gestation / dates. Best practice is generally go by LMP until 12 week scan, as it's so hard to accurately date before then.

My 8 week private scan put me back 2 days but my nhs scan yesterday put me on a week.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 06/11/2020 09:26

My midwife is currently putting me at 8 but I know I'm only six, they base it off a typical cycle, but I know I ovulated on day 32 so when I go for w scan they will push me back two weeks xx

ivfbeenbusy · 06/11/2020 09:37

I would speak to your midwife again and explain that your scan put you 2 weeks behind where you should be based on your last period - usually in instances where you measure so far behind they'll want to follow up with another scan to confirm things are progressing as they should

It's quite possible you ovulated and implanted later than expected hence the scan showing only 6 weeks but midwife will date pregnancy by LMP until 12 week dating scan when due date may be revised

They don't really take private scans into account for this purpose assuming that's what it was - although I had an early NHS scan and actually if I remember right that wasn't really used for dating either only the 12 week one

xbabymamax · 06/11/2020 11:14

Scan was nhs, and I told the midwife she said she is still going with that I'm 8 weeks at this point the scan would've made me about 7

This was my scan a week before my midwife appointment

Why did my early scan show me as 6 weeks but the midwife put me at 8?

The nhs always dates from last bleed then adjusts at 12 weeks. I had a "12 week scan" this week even though I knew, and told them, that this was week 10 (irregular periods, knew my ovulation dates). They will just scan me again in 2 weeks.

So if you had any irregularity in periods, this could b the same for you

Moo678 · 06/11/2020 16:33

Scan dates aren’t particularly accurate before 12 wks so they won’t adjust your due date until your ‘booking scan’.

They see lots of people who don't know the date of their LMP/didn't know they were pregnant till late/got dates wrong and are early as well as people who didn't ovulate 14 days after their period (which is where the standard calculation comes from). Until the dating scan they'll work off the LMP and correct the dates then. You don't need to worry about it, they'll be used to people turning up at the "12 week scan" who are basically any number of weeks pregnant Smile I was 13 and a half weeks at mine!
