Flu jab in early pregnancy?

EatPrayYoga · 05/11/2020 07:55

I'm five weeks pregnant and haven't had my flu jab yet.

I know it is recommended in pregnancy but is it a risk to have it in the first trimester?

In my first pregnancy I had it much later but of course already flu season!

I had mine done at the same time as my 12 week scan. No risk at all as it's not live virus.

ivfbeenbusy · 05/11/2020 08:04

My Midwife said you have to wait until 16 weeks to get it as not effective before that

SunnySideUp2020 · 05/11/2020 08:05

Had mine at 17w

EatPrayYoga · 05/11/2020 08:07

Yes I had mine in the second trimester last time but I was pregnant earlier in the year and not sure what you do if you are pregnant through flu season. I will speak to my GP but even if she says it's okay I will be nervous about it!

I usually have it done anyway through work so really wish I had already had it and didn't need to worry about this.

I had mine done just before I found out I was pregnant. My midwife said it’s totally fine.

Last pregnancy I had mine before 12 weeks. Conceived in October. Daughter is now 15 months.

This pregnancy I had at 16 weeks with whooping cough vaccine, conceived in July.

This was more similar to my first pregnancy. I found out I was pregnant in June so would have been into my second trimester by the time it was flu season and I vaguely remember having them around the same time.

@EatPrayYoga absolutely fine to have it now - in fact please do as flu and pregnancy is nasty and this year with covid we know that covid and flu is a really bad combination!!

EatPrayYoga · 05/11/2020 08:23

Thank you. Yes I thought that @countbackfromten I have actually booked it for this Saturday but then someone said something which made me worry about it.

I've booked a telephone appointment with my GP to check with her today.

That's whooping cough. You can have flu jab any time.
TheDaydreamBelievers · 05/11/2020 08:38

I had it at 8weeks. Both occ health (I'm nhs so they administer it to staff) and my midwife happy with it

EatPrayYoga · 05/11/2020 09:06

GP said she would advise I have it after 12 weeks

I had it at about 9 weeks, via occ health at work (NHS worker). Was also offered it via the GP from as soon as I notified them about my pregnancy. It’s fine in 1st trimester and no need to wait

EatPrayYoga · 05/11/2020 10:14

Thanks but I the midwife I spoke to snd my GP have said to wait until I am 12 weeks. I know I'll worry if I have it now.

Rainb0wDrops · 05/11/2020 10:31

That's strange that they have different advice. I was asked to have it at my booking in appt at 9 weeks (just a few weeks ago)

EatPrayYoga · 05/11/2020 10:45

It's hard either way as I would have worried about having it but it's also a worry not to have it due to the risks associated with flu but I'm hoping the risk is low as we are both wfh and contact with others is very limited due to Covid

@EatPrayYoga I managed to avoid it last pregnancy (rather skillfully as it often makes me ill). This time round I got it before 12 week scan as that's when our drive through clinic was running.

countbackfromten · 05/11/2020 11:41

It is bizarre because you can have the flu jab at any time and I honestly don’t see any point in delaying it and risking exposure!

Superscientist · 05/11/2020 13:08

I had my flu jab last year a week before I found out I was pregnant. I had my booking appointment at 9 weeks and my midwife offered me a flu jab if I hadn't already had one

Sansa87 · 05/11/2020 14:08

I had my flu jab at 10 weeks. They said the earlier the better as you want to avoid your body getting any viral infection during the early stages in particular so it can focus on making the baby.

CharlieD2020 · 05/11/2020 14:39

Odd so many different recommendations from midwives! I had mine at about 6 weeks, I'm 11 weeks now.
