Hearing baby HB with a stethoscope? Tips?

I am 18w4 and started trying to listen to baby's heartbeat with a stethoscope.
I can't find anything...
Never done it before so not sure what to look for.

I heard it with the doppler at the MW but obviously it is completely different!

Anyone tried? Succeeded? Can give me tips?
😊

My husband is a paramedic and we tried from 18 weeks to hear the HB and its never been heard and I'm 36wks now.. we think you need a child's one which is more sensitive than the adult ones he uses for work.. Good luck if u manage to get it to work 😊

I think this is why home dopplers, etc., aren't recommended. Without the knowledge and experience to place and interpret tools like stethoscopes you risk worrying yourself. Best to wait until you next see the MW.

I’m a midwife, I’ve never tried with a stethoscope. I’m not sure it’ll work.

There is such a thing as a fetascope, but it has a trumpet shaped/pin and type end for amplification so I assume without that you can’t hear it or why would fetascopes exist? I can use a loo roll tube to hear a hb but not at 18 weeks and that’s difficult even later on.

Doesn't sound like a very good idea to me (medic) even fetal Dopplers are to be used with caution for the reason if you're not trained and pick up wrong things or even nothing you will raise anxiety for potentially no good reason.

Sure the ladies on call the midwife didn't use stethoscopes 🙈
I have a Doppler but know what I'm listening for - If you don't other sounds can easily be misinterpreted

Audreyseyebrows · 04/11/2020 16:37

I would put the stethoscope away!

SunnySideUp2020 · 04/11/2020 16:44

Thanks for the replies!
I am not worried at all and certainly not reassuring myself with this. Would have gotten a doppler otherwise but also don't believe it's my job or that i an trained to use.
Just wanted to try with DH thought would be nice 👌 as it's completely harmless and we did try with toilet paper roll and felt stupid 😂
But it looks like it's not happening... didn't have high expectations but a little disappointed.

@SunnySideUp2020

With my DD I downloaded an app on my iphone and after about 30 weeks you can hear and record it via your phone speakers and also send the audio videos to people - think the app was £4.99

@SunnySideUp2020

You just have to take your phone out of any case and then hold it against your bump

SunnySideUp2020 · 05/11/2020 09:21

Aw thanks for sharing @ivfbeenbusy
I will see what the MW say about the stethoscope!
Will take it to my next appt and ask her if she can find anything herself 😁 just out of curiosity again...
And will definitely try this app later on!
