Smoke on baby clothes

Hiya,

I’m currently expecting my first baby due in feb.

I’ve been collecting bits and pieces and as the purse strings are a bit tighter/ saving for when I am on SMP I have been looking out for things on Facebook/ Freecycle.

I picked up a bundle of baby clothes today from free cycle but they smell quite strongly of smoke.

I’m worried about the potential of third hand smoke and Googled if washing a few times will make them safe enough to wear but can’t find a definitive answer. There is some good stuff so I don’t want to get rid if it’s saveable but equally would never put my baby at risk.

Has anyone got any advice on whether the clothes would pose a risk and if not how do I get the awful smell out?

Thanks

I would wash them, and if they don’t smell of smoke after washing then I’m sure they’ll be fine.

If they still smelled after a couple of washes it probably won’t come out.

Hi I would give them a couple of washes on a hot cycle I'm sure that will get rid of the smoky smell.

I personally wouldn't risk it but you could try presoaking and then washing on 90. I don't think smoke smell ever truly comes out of clothes but I have an overly sensitive nose.

Hey, I would use dettol anti bacterial laundry cleaner on high temperature and use a generous amount of fabric conditioner x

I have no clue on the actual science of this, but I'd imagine after a couple of washes they'd be fine. I bought almost everything second hand for my baby and had a few things that came from smokers. I just washed twice and then thought no more about it.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/11/2020 15:16

Wouldn’t risk it tbh - there’s so many second hand baby clothes sales/ people giving away that stuff

Moo678 · 03/11/2020 15:19

I’m sure it would be fine. If you get a dry day could you peg them out on the line too - I feel like drying outside really freshens up clothes and nappies. I buy a lot of stuff 2nd hand too.

You do know that you should wash all second hand baby clothes?

Soak in don soda Crystals first, then wash in a long cycle using a good quality detergent in the hottest temperature the items can safely be washed in (read labels for this). This will be fine.

There are plenty of babies who live in homes with smokers who are absolutely fine. I’d wash a few times, laundry cleaners maybe some fabric pearls and then a final wash in baby suitable softener etc and it’s should come out. As long as they no longer smell of smoke you’ll be ok

You could also try presoaking in white vinegar, or putting it in your softener section. It's good at getting rid of smells. A couple of washes and hung out overnight when it's frosty, and it will be fine.
