Hi all...just wondering when you have a blood test when pregnant is that at the 12 week scan?
Also...what do they test for with that blood test?

I had blood tests, urine test, blood pressure, height and weight done straight after my 12 week scan.

I think the blood tests were for iron level, routine screening of some diseases (maybe HIV).
If you opt for the Down’s syndrome screening they will take blood for that.
And depending on your ethnicity and risk factors they might check for diabetes and sickle cell anaemia.

Is there something you’re particularly worried about?

They test for blood group & type too - if you're rhesus negative they might need to give you an additional injection called Anti-D.

It depends how they're doing it at the moment in your area but I had booking in bloods done at the community health centre and the screening tests (DS, Edwards & Patau) done after my 12 week scan.

I had bloods when booking in at 8 weeks and bloods after my 12 week scan. Then repeat bloods at 28 weeks.

I had the same tests done as Jemima. Just to add, from your blood they will also determine your blood type, which will be important if you need a blood transfusion at any point. Also if you have a rhesus negative blood type (such as A negative, O negative), it's possible your body will react negatively to your baby's blood, and you will need an injection to prevent this.
