Hi folks

I’m currently 11 weeks pregnant. I have told the head knowing there needs to be a risk assessment. I asked again about a risk assessment and the head said you don’t do the risk assessment until after the 12 week scan. I didn’t think this was right and my 12 week scan isn’t actually until nearer 14 weeks. The head also said that the guidance has changed and now covers up to 35 weeks in school. I’ve read nothing of this.

Anyone any more in the know than me? Just wondering whether to just let it pass or make a point.

TIA

I'm not sure on the risk assessment part but my friend is an NHS hospital nurse and the guidance changed for them to 35 weeks (or start of maternity) so I imagine it might be similar for teachers.

Here is the law: maternityaction.org.uk/advice/health-and-safety-during-pregnancy-and-on-return-to-work/

They should do a risk assessment now. It is a legal requirement. It has nothing to do with any 12 week scan, otherwise you'd be working for 3 months without any assessed risk - which is illegal if you have informed them of your pregnancy.

Also, this organisation is extremely helpful in terms of your rights: pregnantthenscrewed.com/what-are-my-rights/

A very helpful letter template reminding your employer of their legal responsibility to undertake a risk assessment (this would apply whenever, not just because of Covid).
