Refusing GTT?

Hi

I have my GTT booked in for my local hospital this Thursday. I’m in Leeds so quite high rates of Covid and I would be lying if i said that the new lockdown being announced has reassured me that going to sit in a hospital waiting room for a minimum of 2 hours in the current climate is a good idea

at my booking in, the midwife did say that they were trialling a random blood glucose test instead of the GTT at hospital but I understand these weren’t as reliable at picking up cases of gestational diabetes.

I have asked our trusts e-midwife and they said I could refuse the GTT in favour of the random blood test but has anybody actually done this before?

In my trust we’re not offered the usual GTT just the single blood test. I imagine if some are taking this approach it should be ok for you to opt for

motherofsnortpigs · 02/11/2020 13:41

Are you at particular risk of gestational diabetes? If not, then it would be entirely reasonable to opt out.

SkylinesTurnstiles · 02/11/2020 13:45

I am in SE and had this test this morning. I had to wait in my car for the 2 hrs. Perhaps you could do the same if it’s the waiting in hospital waiting room which is your main reason for not wanting the test? :)

Thegirlhasnoname · 02/11/2020 14:08

Waiting room and I remember having a migraine for days after the test when I had in during my first pregnancy is what is making me not jump for joy about having it. I even remember mentioning to my midwife at booking in that I was glad the trust had moved to the random blood test as the GTT make me quite unwell last time (and tested negative for diabetes)

Unfortunately waiting in the car won’t be an option for me as DH will be dropping me off and then going back home to take our 2 year old to nursery before turning around to pick me back up again 😅

I recently had the test, I fasted overnight had a single blood test at 8.30 and that was it went home.
The lady taking blood couldn't tell me what was different doing it that way to the usual way so no idea how reliable it actually is

If you had GD last pregnancy there is a good chance you will have it again this pregnancy, so I would want to make sure I had the more reliable test in your shoes.

Disappointedkoala · 02/11/2020 16:15

They were only doing the blood test here a couple of months ago when I had mine. I was in and out before the car parking charge kicked in!

Thegirlhasnoname · 02/11/2020 16:17

I didn’t have GD last time though, the test just made me very unwell (as does any energy drink with tons of glucose in for as long as I can remember and is one of the main factors I don’t drink caffeine or fizzy drinks!)

I feel like (because I’m a bit of a wimp) I will end up going to the test at hospital and ask to have annual leave on Friday in preparation for the migraine of the year

It's just a blood test, I had mine on Monday (and Wednesday because they lost my sample -_-) it's a two minute appointment, that's all no drink involved.

LemonBreeland · 02/11/2020 16:18

I was tested for GD in only one of my three pregnancies, and I just did the fasting blood test. I didn't know there was a different way. This was also 9 years ago.

CooperLooper · 02/11/2020 16:24

My hospital hasn't don't GTTs since the original lockdown. Instead what they do is a combination:

Fasting blood test (instant results)
HBA1C blood test which shows your average glucose levels over the last 12 weeks

Not as accurate as a GTT but good enough as an alternative and you don't have to drink that syrupy shite.

You could ask for those instead? Be in and out in 10 mins.

SpeccyLime · 02/11/2020 16:29

Ahh sorry! I misunderstood your post.

In that case, if you don’t have any additional risk factors for GD I would think you would be ok with the HBA1C

Emelene · 02/11/2020 16:31

I just had the fasting blood test, my Trust aren't doing the full 2 hour test as they said there wasn't enough room in the waiting room to socially distance.

Following as I had to do Oral GTT last pregnancy and no way do I want to do it again. DS was measuring big - his dad is a unit - but consultant insisted father’s build is irrelevant Hmm. Didn’t have GTT, DS born a robust 4kg at 38 weeks.
