Should I be concerned?

I'm 23+0 today and at about 5pm developed a severe headache right at the front of my head. I took some paracetamol but it didn't seem to make any difference. Within 30 minutes or so I suddenly became absolutely exhausted and accidentally fell asleep whilst just resting on the sofa. Since waking at about 645 (by DS and DP playing) I have struggled to stay awake and my headache is still quite bad. I also had a sudden wave of nausea and vomited. I am just feeling very 'off' and not myself at all.

I foolishly googled and have now concerned myself that it could be symptoms of pre-eclampsia. But am I right in thinking that 23 weeks is too early for pre eclampsia onset? I'm torn between just seeing how I am in the next few days and potentially mentioning it at my next midwife appointment in 10 days or calling up the ward just to double check. I don't want to waste anyone's time and am scared I'm being overly dramatic about a headache! Any and all advice welcome, thank you.

@JBCG
A headache and sickness where paracetamol doesn't help is usually a migraine. It's probably nothing baby related, and you'll feel better tomorrow!

I, personally, would just give triage a ring to ease your mind (as much as it can be eased with a terrible headache).

Hope you feel better soon.

Pre eclampsia can develop any time after 20 weeks. I'd call too just to ease your mind. It's likely nothing.

I would probably assume migraine (hormones cause my migraines) but I also think you should call and speak to a midwife to get professional advice.

In my area we have a maternity advice line, do you have anything like that?

I had a similar situation and called triage to ask what they suggest . I had a midwife appointment 2 days later and I too didn’t want to waste anyone’s time . They told me to go to the hospital day assessment unit to be checked out . I went in and they checked my blood pressure a few times , checked that baby was fine and that my urine was fine . They kept me there for an hour to monitor . As it turned out I was okay ( and you probably are too) but they also told me that I made the right decision to come in . It’s worth calling your hospital/midwife for sure. It’s not a waste of time .

Call the midwives. They always told me they’d rather see 100 women with nothing wrong than miss something.

Thank you all - I fell asleep again shortly after posting, but have woken up this morning and my headache seems to have gone. I will keep an eye on how I feel over the next few days and call up if I'm concerned.

Thank you again!

Glad to hear you are feeling better OP, I get maybe one migraine a year but since falling pregnant (I’m 14 weeks) I’ve had 4 so far.
If you aren’t used to them you may not even know what they feel like but way you’ve described it sounds exactly like one.
It most likely will be all your hormones changing.

JBCG · 02/11/2020 09:34

@Fruitloops34 yes I think it must be - I've never had one before so was a little alarmed! My default setting is mild panic about anything medical anyway so I sometimes need to remind myself not to automatically assume worst case scenario .. and stay off google!!
