Enoxaparin Injections

Good evening all

I am currently 11 weeks pregnant and have today started enoxaparin injections and will have to continue this delay throughout my pregnancy.

We had been struggling to conceive for 18 months and were going through fertility testing which showed “Lupus Anticoagulant dectected” about a week before I found out I was pregnant. They had planned to retest for positivity after 12 weeks but can no longer do this now I am pregnant. The consultant has therefore decided that I need to be treated as if I have this lupus condition which means the injections daily as well as 150mg of aspirin.

So today was my first injection. And it’s come out practically black but with a red spot. I shall attach a photo. The injection was done just above the bruise so I am not sure why this red spot has appeared underneath.

Has anyone any experience with these injections and bruising? Will it look like this every day?

Thanks x

Ah nasty bloody injections. I’ve been on these for the whole pregnancy. Flick the excess drops off the needle by tapping the plastic before inserting (I wipe the needle but that’s probably not recommended as it’s not sterile), the loose drops cause more bruising and stinging.

Also do NOT rub the injection site afterwards. It’s a natural thing to do, especially if it tingles or stings, but that definitely causes bruising.

Rotate injection sites regularly, you can inject in upper thighs as well as tummy sides.

They’re hit and miss. Some are just nasty and bruise anyway, but by doing the above, I’ve had far less bruises.

Ive been on them since 9 weeks and will be on them until baby is born and totally agree with PP. do not rub the injection site afterwards as it is a sure fire wire to make sure it bruises

Also, it looks as though you have injected pretty low on your abdomen in that picture. You’re meant to do it no more than 5cm away from your belly button and I find it best to alternate with the fatty tissue in the top of my thighs too

My first few bruises but not thereafter. I think you just also get used to doing it?

Not sure if they are the same as what I’m on. (Tinzaparin). I got some really bad reactions for a while to start with, dark bruising a golf ball sized lumps under my skin but 5 months down the line I rarely get even a small lump or bruise! They got better every time!

For me it was practice, I had them daily for 6 months and some days the bruises were awful but then I “learnt” and didn’t have them anymore. For me the best place was between waist and hips - hold a bit of flesh with your fingers and try the right angle. It’s trying really. Good luck x

Thank you all so much for the replies and telling me of your own experiences. It will hopefully be something my body gets used to and the bruising eases. Just scary to see how much it has bruised up already and to think this will happen everyday.

I did this injection with the antenatal nurse guidance and she had advised me to inject more around my sides/hips. I don’t think I touched it afterwards but I may have done absentmindedly. I’m so nervous I’ll do it in the wrong place! Xx

Hello @kcf90 same here, after my last miscarriage and lack of protein c deficiency my Ob/gyn started Enoxaparin since I am 8 weeks.
I am 13+4 now and has been advised to take it till 36 weeks.
Yes I had similar painful experiences in starting days then since its subcutaneous it wouldn't hurt much.
Dont rub after injection but gentle press and hold the spot with cotton for good 5 to 10 minutes without moving yourself.
Happy Pregnancy! 😊😊

Also my gyn instructed me to inject on thigh part so it remains in blood

I'm on Dalterparin injections and aspirin daily and I just find that some are perfectly fine, don't really hurt and the others are terrible.
I seem to go through phases of getting massive bruises and lumps but then manage a couple of weeks without
I alternate sides every day. I can't bring myself to do them in my thighs just yet but we'll see when my bump starts getting bigger!
I started off ok but have started to feel a bit fed up with doing them but just got to keep telling myself it's all so hopefully I get s lovely baby at the end !
