I called my doctors today to try and book an appointment as I found out I was pregnant on Tuesday. They’ve said the midwifes aren’t seeing people face to face until they’re 25 weeks... I’m probably just freaking out because this is my first pregnancy and I understand things are going to be a bit crazy with Covid.

What does this mean in regards to the 12 week scan?! Also, if I require sickness tablets, will I need to try and book an appointment to get these?

I have a call with the midwife in 2 weeks but I’m panicking as I’m not sure what, if anything I’m meant to be doing. I’ve got folic acid... is there anything else I should take/need?

We haven’t told our families yet and really don’t want to until after 12 weeks, so other than my partner, I’m feeling pretty alone in this.

Why do you need to see a doctor? You can usually self refer to the hospital and then a midwife will be in touch. Scans are done by sonographers and separate to midwife appts. You will have a booking appt and then could be your 16 and 25 week appts will be over the phone.

So whereas you won't see a midwife face to face you will still speak to one on the phone. You will have your booking in appointment at 8ish weeks, then your 12 weeks scan, then a 16 week call with your midwife also.
Sickness tablets wise, I just called my GP and they text me across a prescription.
Although not technically my first I was pregnant after a blighted ovum so I get why you are anxious about not really seeing anyone or speaking to people. I've found reading the threads on here really helpful for support on those more panicked days.

Vitamin D is the only thing other than folic acid you need. Or at least it's the only other specific thing my midwife has asked me if I'm taking.

Have they organised your booking in appointment or explained how you can do that? You will still have your 12 week scan as usual but you will need to check with the midwife, either when you make the booking in appointment or during the appointment itself that they book you in for the scan. They will take bloods and a urine sample at the scan appointment. The booking in appointment is usually between 8-10 weeks and will be by telephone.

Look on the nhs website for a list of things you can and can't eat and check with your gp if you are taking any medications that they are safe to take. If you get bad enough morning sickness that you need ant-sickness medicine then contact your gp about this as midwives can't prescribe anyway.

Do you have a contact number for your midwife? 25 weeks does seem a very long wait before you get to see them for a first pregnancy.

Take folic acid and vitamin d supplements.

Your booking appointment in 2 weeks - ask loads of questions!

But typically you will have:

Booking appointment -7/8 weeks - phone
Dating scan - 12 weeks - in person obvs
Midwife app - 16 weeks - phone
Anomaly scan - 20 weeks - in person

After that a couple more midwife appointments before your due date.

In terms of prescriptions you can have a phone conversation with a doctor like you would do normally and they can prescribe you sickness meds if you need them x

Thank you all so much for the advice and the useful links!

So I have this first call with the midwife on the 12th. It just seems such a long wait when it’s your first pregnancy but I guess it’s relatively normal. I’ll make sure I get as much information as possible about how things will progress in regards to scans and such after that first call.

I have folic acid and will pick up some vitamin D tomorrow.

I don’t have a number for midwife yet. It’s going to be a long two weeks waiting to speak to them 😂

Had my telephone booking appointment on weds (at nearly 11 weeks!!) and have my scan in 2 weeks.
Midwife said they’ll do urine, obs and bloods when I go for the scan, and I’ll get all my paperwork. Next appt is telephone at 16 weeks and then anomaly scan at 20

Illy603 · 30/10/2020 16:16

11 weeks! Wow! Congrats ☺️

I’m so worried I’m further along than I think. I cannot for the life of me remember when my last period started 🙈

Even in normal times the NHS wont see you till 8-10 weeks @Illy603! It's a harsh fact but many pregnancies end before then so they tend not to do too much too early.

The booking appt telephone call was super short for me - I couldn't think of what to ask! My 16 week is in person for some reason.
