Waters breaking in inconvenient places??

Has anyone had their waters break in a really crappy place? I'm nearly 37 weeks now and after my works broke spectacularly with my son (at home luckily), I now have a fear of going out anywhere alone in case it happens in the supermarket or something! Tell me your stories (and how you handled it!) 😁

Mine always broke late in active labour.
Getting sweeps increases the chances of the waters breaking before labour. So skipping them (which is allowed), might be something to consider.

Mine broke on my friend's sofa, she didn't mind.

Onceuponatimethen · 30/10/2020 10:10

Mine were at home too op, but IME people are generally very understanding about anything pg related.

Different issue but supermarket related, my 2 year old kid projectile vomited in Sainsbury’s and they were amazing - we alerted staff member (there was a LOT of mess) and they cleaned up while we took him out. We thanked them profusely and they couldn’t have been kinder. I should mention he’d been eating blackberries immediately before so the vomit was bright purple Blush

I am sure they would be the same with waters breaking!

I bet it could be spectacular- mine went on our living room carpet and it was very messy!!

Pukeymama · 30/10/2020 10:23

Ah that's nice to hear they were great @onceuponatimethen. I'm sure wherever it happened people would be lovely, would still be a nightmare though!

Mine broke on the sofa last time too, it was a soft old leather and permanently stained it. So I had a large ass imprint on the sofa until it got replaced later that year 🤦

Mine broke on my sofa and in my bed.

However, my Mum works in a department store and a couple of years ago, a woman's waters broke while she was sitting on the sofa she was considering buying.

Onceuponatimethen · 30/10/2020 10:43

@ShowOfHands what happened next? Did the shop soak it up, as it were?!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/10/2020 10:49

If i were to have a third (highly unlikely), the waters breaking would be the least of the problem. Both my babies arrived a few minutes after the waters breaking. I was still able to wander around and chat to people. (My contractions caused no pain... Apparently rare but it does happen. Not as fun as it sounds though... I've given birth alone despite being in hospital)

Prettybluepigeons · 30/10/2020 10:50

Mine didn't break until I was pushing my babies out!

violetclouds · 30/10/2020 11:00

My forewaters went after midwife accidentally popped them checking how dilated I was 15 hours into labour then the rest went a few mins before baby was born 20 odd hours after that

bumpsadaisy11 · 30/10/2020 11:09

My waters broke in B & Q.
I was looking for a border for the nursery & suddenly there was a pop then a whoosh of water.
The puddle was huge & I was really embarrassed.
To make matters worse, my DH (now ex) was so mortified that he ran out of the store & left me on my own.
I had to walk like I had pooed my pants through the whole store leaving a watery trail as I went.
I was only 34 weeks at the time, so it really was the last thing that I expected!!! ConfusedBlush

wannabebump · 30/10/2020 11:12

@Pukeymama this is my fear as well! Now not going very far from home at all!

Frazzled13 · 30/10/2020 11:12

After being assured by the woman who ran my antenatal class that for most women it wasn’t a big gush like in films, but a slower trickle, mine broke like a tsunami and ruined our mattress. But I was at home at least

MsAnnThropic · 30/10/2020 11:19

Mine broke all over my husband's head!!

We had decided it was time to go to hospital, so I asked him to help put my pants on ( I'd been in the bath) he bent down and as I lifted my leg my waters broke like a tsunami all over his head!

At least we were at home I suppose!

peregrinedive · 30/10/2020 11:20

DD was born 4 weeks ago still in the membranes in the pool. Very strange thing to see her in the sac bobbing in the pool! With DS they had to break my waters manually during labour to allow them to put a monitor on his head as they kept losing his heart beat on the external monitor.

personwifemum · 30/10/2020 11:32

Is it true if your waters break in M&S you get free shopping for life. I'm sure that's a myth round our way?

Pukeymama · 30/10/2020 11:36

@bumpsadiasy11 that's awful of him!! What a dick.

dixiedo · 30/10/2020 11:43

@personwifemum If this is true I'll camp in there for the final weeks.

HoppingPavlova · 30/10/2020 11:46

Mine broke at home but I don’t understand the problem of going out. If it happens out, I’m pretty willing to bet not one place will give you the evil eye and hand you a mopConfused. Also, when it happens at home you need to deal with the mess, either at the time or later. Pretty sure no one this has happened to has ever received a call from anywhere 3 days later asking them to go in and rectify the situation! I would have much rather mine occurred while out and about and I didn’t have to deal with it at any pointGrin.

ShowOfHands · 30/10/2020 11:51

My Mum took the woman into the staff loos to help her clean up, sent somebody to get towels from homewares for her and gave her a couple to sit on in the car. She also phoned me and asked me to talk to the woman as she was panicking. I'm no expert but I had been through spontaneous and unexpected breaking of waters twice.

The store sent her a hamper a week later.

Pukeymama · 30/10/2020 11:55

Ah @showofhands that's so lovely!

LeaveMyDamnJam · 30/10/2020 11:59

Mine started as a slow leak in a restaurant. Something felt odd, so I went to the loo, but it wasn’t wee. We had just ordered, so didn’t even get to eat!
The slow leak carried on and on and I ended up being induced. Lucky me!

HoppingPavlova · 30/10/2020 12:03

Actually made me remember one of my kids accidents and a very weird response to that. I will preface it by saying 3yo kid was toilet trained so not like I took an untrained kid out pissing about everywhere.

Was in a Dept store and they had a wee accident. I found a staff member and informed them. They asked if I had cleaned it upHmm. I said I was not in the habit of carrying a mop and bucket around so no. They then offered to go get me paper towels! I said I didn’t think spreading it out to a greater area where people could still potentially slip and walk wee all through the place was a brilliant idea and she needed to organise a proper clean up of the area with correct equipment and for good measure have one of those portable ‘careful slip hazard’ picture signs placed there while it was being organised. She went full on cats bum at that point.

The reality is, anywhere where there are general members of the public, you are going to get the odd vomit, wee, diarrhoea (less frequently though) or amniotic fluid on occasion. There should be a protocol to deal with this and staff need to put it into action. It’s just part of dealing with the public.

TheFoz · 30/10/2020 12:13

@MsAnnThropic that is so funny! What a way for your baby to make their entrance!
With both my previous babies my waters had to be broken manually. I’m wondering should I get puppy pads for the mattress this time round though!

HoppingPavlova · 30/10/2020 12:51

Yes, put a puppy protector or similar down wherever you will sit. I had a protector on the side of the lounge I sat on, my bed and the car seat. Different times all got a workout. Didn’t save the floor that also copped it but at least I didn’t have ruined upholstery.

SingingSands · 30/10/2020 13:10

Thankfully mine wasn't in an inconvenient place, but I wasn't prepared for it at all.

Mine went in hospital, on the labour ward. I was about to climb onto the bed and they went like a tsunami, hit the floor, and washed back up over me - I was absolutely soaked from top to toe! Had to take my nightie off and they gave me a gown to wear. I was not expecting it to happen like that or for there to be so much! I remember watching two woman with mops clearing it up and apologising profusely for the mess.
