Severe pelvic/hip pain - 39 weeks!

Have had quite a bit of pelvic/hip pain throughout pregnancy often becoming quite severe but any time I’ve raised it I’ve just been told it’s because I’m pregnant and I’m plus sized and carrying a big baby 🙄

Tonight it’s reached a point where I can only lift my right foot about 1cm off the floor without having severe shooting pains through my left hip and left side of my groin area 😳 I also can’t seem to lie down on my left side without quite intense shooting pains round the bottom of my bump and in my hip etc.

I’m 39.5 weeks so I’m really not expecting to be comfortable at this point 😂 - just wondering what other people’s experiences are? Should I be concerned or had baby just trapped a nerve or something? 🤔

Look up SPD/PGP and implement all strategies described.

Stop lifting and pushing anything. Sit on a plastic bag in the car so you can turn easily.

Tell your MW.

Don't let them force your legs apart in labour.

Thanks @Hawkmoth - definitely sounds like what I’m feeling.

Oh, and don't push a big pram around once baby is here. I recovered after subsequent babies once I had learnt this the hard way with the first.

Thanks for the tips Flowers Think I’m going to have to contact someone this morning - I can’t lie down on my side for more than 2/3 minutes before the pains become ridiculous in my pelvis. Went to sleep sitting in an armchair for an hour but I can’t stand up without help, and I’m really really struggling to walk - like on the verge of tears painful 😳 my community midwife takes 48 hours to return calls - will be Monday now before I’d hear back. I hate to call the maternity unit at the hospital when it’s not an emergency but I’m concerned how immobile it’s making me as I’m booked for induction in a few days 😳

Oh RWK29 I feel your pain!
I'm 38 weeks today & really struggling with pelvic/hip & back pain. It's getting really difficult to move & impossible to get comfortable.

I really hope you manage to get some help & relief. Try keeping your legs together as much as possible and sit down when getting dressed rather than trying to stand on one leg. I find hot water bottles/baths give a bit of relief for a bit but it sounds like you have it a lot worse.

Not long to go now, it should hopefully resolve itself once baby is born. But it's awful how women get fobbed off and expected to just put up with the pain

This happened to me. I was in agony and tears. The midwife told me that anything pain related needed to be dealt with in triage anyway, so don’t feel bad about going in. They can give you codeine. It’s safe to take and the only thing that helped me at all. It’ll only be to survive the last few days, no point going into an induction in agony and exhausted. Contact your maternity unit this morning, they can help.

@Niffler2019 Oh it’s sore isn’t it 🙈 I’ve been dealing with that for a few weeks too but this is on a whole other level. I can’t lift my feet more than a couple of cm off the floor so there’s no way of getting into a bath at all to even try that! 20 minutes it’s taking me to walk from bed to the toilet and back on the same floor of my house and with DH having to support me. @FizzingWhizzbee123 Phoned triage this morning and was told that unfortunately there wasn’t much they could do for me at this stage in pregnancy and there’s no point in going in because there’s already a plan in place for induction and that’s the earliest they can offer. “Paracetamol every 4 hours and just stay as comfy as you can” was the instructions from the phonecall.

Oh, if you have an epidural you need to measure your pain free knee gap beforehand so that they don't damage it when you can't feel and tell them to stop.

RWK29 · 31/10/2020 04:13

@Hawkmoth I’ve been reading up on that, thanks 👍🏻 Had to call the maternity unit back as the pain is now so severe that it’s making me almost sick when I try and walk - and that’s with DH holding onto me to try and take some of the weight. Was told I could go in if I wanted but they can’t bring forward my induction, I’ll have to stay in until delivery with regular doses of Codeine and then baby will have to stay in and be monitored for at least 48 hours afterwards for drug withdrawal 😓 so I’m still at hike completely unable to move off the couch 😓

I had exactly the same thing from about 32 weeks. One time my toddler ran off and I was almost crying in pain trying to catch him. Got to the point I hardly even left the couch and if I did I was leaning on anything near me to walk. As soon as baby was out it was gone!

cultkid · 31/10/2020 05:25

You ring them and demand to be seen and have better pain relief
How do they know you don't have an infection

Hawkmoth · 31/10/2020 10:50

Drug withdrawal for a few days codeine? Sounds like they are trying to fob you off. They don't do that with pethidine...

cultkid · 31/10/2020 11:19

The baby does not have withdrawal for codeine for like a week that's bollocks

I took tramadol and codeine for 4 months until day of delivery
Son was mild withdrawal

It's nonsense
Tell them you need codeine now

You can take 8/500 if you can't get them to prescribe stronger

Also you need to have a urine dip test to make sure

@MsChatterbox Oh gosh, I can’t imagine this and having a toddler to look after too 😳 fingers crossed mine disappears as quickly 🤞🏼

@cultkid They asked a whole load of questions on the phone so I’m assuming they’re just going on the fact I have no other symptoms apart from the pain.

@Hawkmoth I did think that myself to be honest. When we saw the consultant during the week to book induction, the first day they could offer was Sunday as they were completely fully booked so I’m wondering if they’re just quite short staffed etc. To be honest, I can’t move at all unaided so if they’re that short staffed or busy it’s probably better that I’m at home 😔
