I'm 35 weeks and my sister was throwing her old cot out so I said I would have it so I didn't Havel buy a new one, it's a good Quality cot in good condition just has pen and stuff all over it from where my niece has drawn I want to clean it and paint it with some white gloss. Is it okay to do this??? I'm not sure

Hi there, I painted a cot, I had low VOC chalk paint and used that. After asked husband to wax it with also low VOC wax. You are suppose to air it for over 4 weeks before putting baby in there though.

@Pinecone88 thanks for replying can I use regular gloss or does it have to be special paint

I painted the cot that my OH had as a child, and all his siblings; so it was used for all my children and now my GC. The paint is still intact.

There are lots of safe nursery paints.

From the research I've done it's just important that it's low VOC, that's all. You can also buy 0 VOC stuff which is obviously ideal, but costs a lot of money.
You can also buy special paints and stuff for baby cots and furniture, but again it's expensive and I personally did not feel it's necessary. If the baby starts biting on the railing later it does not really matter if the paint is super eco non toxic, I would not want him biting on it at all.

Try cleaning it first with cif.
Don't use gloss on it. You'd need a safe nursery paint. Babies tend to chew their cot rails when teething.
Remember you'll need a new mattress too.

@36weekswithno2 okay how come I can't use the mattress

There is some evidence that using a second hand mattress increases risk of sids

I found this link useful when organising what I could reuse of my older sons

I wouldn't. Mine chewed the cot bars all the time when she was teething. I'd clean it and sand it down any particular bad marks.

Agree with a new mattress - they're not that expensive. We're buying a new one for our next baby even though I read it was ok for siblings to use the same one if it was still in good condition.

Avery7 · 30/10/2020 06:31

I was going to do this but decided it would be too much work in the end; I'd have had to sand it all down, prime it, & then apply non-toxic paint.

I was gifted a crib on facebook that wasn't in the best condition cosmetic wise so I bought turner&gray spray paint for 3 pound from b&m, so much easier, cheaper and quicker than painting with a brush (whole crib done in 5 minutes), only took 2 cans and it's safe to use on pretty much anything x

Standard gloss tends to be oil based. I wouldn’t use it as it they are toxic to the environment, so no way would I want my baby ingesting it if she started chewing on the rails. You can get water based satin paint that might be better, or special baby safe paints for painting nursery items.
I personally just wouldn’t risk it.

@imjustbxx little green is all child safe as is farrow and ball 👍

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 30/10/2020 10:21

Japlac is child safe paint

Frenchic is also child friendly, and their Al Fresco range is very hard wearing. We repainted a plastic train shaped bed for my toddler with this paint and it came up great.

But yeah, get a new mattress.

ChampooPapi · 30/10/2020 12:51

Earthborn paint too. There are lots of paints and companies that you can order safe paint from now and with UK regulations being so strict, most standard branded paint is ok too.
