I’ve been given a script for Cyclizine and I was wondering why my doctor/pharmacist was so hesitant?

I’ve been sick for two weeks, vomiting, feeling sick and sleeping lots. 6.5 weeks pregnant by scan.

Not sure how much more I can tolerate. Tried peppermint tablets, peppermint tea and Gavisgon for acid.

Well, I’m not a doctor. But I do know that cyclizine is widely used around the world for pregnancy sickness, and has been for decades.
I took it throughout my entire pregnancy (although obviously the fact that DD is totally fine is anecdotal). Various GPs at my surgery prescribed it without an issue and I never had any problem with the pharmacist giving it out either.
I don’t know exactly how bad your sickness is, but dehydration is a danger in pregnancy, and if you start struggling to keep down liquid you’ll really need to find something that helps.
What also helped me was anti sickness travel bands on my wrist, vitamin b6 (you can google safe amounts), eating little and often. Weirdly very sour Granny Smith apples (that I would nibble at for ages) used to settle my stomach and get rid of the gross feeling in my mouth.

Thanks @Frazzled13 I’ve cut out coffee as that made me sick. Thought I would have withdrawal which is why I kept on drinking it. Now I drink tea (and decaf in the afternoon).

I’ve the extreme of binge eating though. Which probably doesn’t help, I’m just never Satisfied with food.

Talk to Pregnancy Sickness Support. They have a very helpful phone line. Cyclizine has been widely used in pregnancy for a long time. It’s never nice to take medication in pregnancy, but you don’t need to suffer either.

I've just been prescribed cyclizine at the start of the week (currently 7+3) and I was assured it is completely safe. It has really helped to take the edge off and allowed me to continue to eat and drink. It was getting to the point where I couldn't earlier this week and I think that poses a bigger risk during pregnancy by the sounds of it. It's not a miracle cure (at least it hasn't been for me) but still so helpful!

Thanks. Now it feels like the back of my throat is burning lol.

That sounds like reflux. Ask for some Omeprazole too. Reflux made my sickness and nausea a lot worse. Omeprazole is safe and helped a lot.

Georgeoftheinternet · 29/10/2020 21:17

@FizzingWhizzbee123 I’ve been trying that as well as I had acid reflux before. I just wish I wasn’t tired and sick all the time. :(

Yes

cultkid · 29/10/2020 21:22

You can take gaviscon to ease it

As someone who's had hypermesis twice

Getting on top of the vomiting and nausea is vit

I was hospitalised about 10 times in my last pregnancy due to dehydration

ohidoliketobe · 29/10/2020 21:25

Please join the hyperemesis support thread on the pregnancy boards, the ladies on there have lots of useful information.

There are lots of medications which are deemed safe for use in pregnancy, however in the UK no drugs are legally safe as they cannot test on pregnant women. What they do have is a number of medications which hace shown not to have any adverse impacts on pregnancy.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum can be a severely debilitating condition and its so important to get it under control best you can. You have my sympathies - I've suffered throughout all 3 of my pregnancies, and have taken cyclizine, promethazine and Prochlorperazine, some times it's the right combination to bring the nausea and vomiting under control.

Georgeoftheinternet · 29/10/2020 21:29

@ohidoliketobe thank you I will do

Yes I used

Cyclisine
Prochloperazine
Ondesetron

To stop the vomiting

Livpool · 29/10/2020 21:31

I had HG and was prescribed anti sickness for a few months and had no issues. They wouldn't be prescribed if they were dangerous

titnomatani · 29/10/2020 22:18

I had HG for 7 months of pregnancy and cyclizine saved me. I was told it was the mildest of the anti-emetics offered to pregnant women. I'd advise you take it, if only to take the edge off that horrible 'I'm going to throw up' feeling.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 29/10/2020 22:21

Yes it's fine, they would not be legally allowed to prescribe it if it wasnt safe. Not sure why the reluctance!
