When will you tell your boss?

Hey

So I'm trying to decide when to tell my boss that I'm pregnant as I'm an early years practitioner and it involves me lifting children quite a lot and some heavy lifting sometimes too!

I also suffered with really bad sickness with my other two children and I'm only 4 weeks and suffering already 😫 so I feel like they will guess?

I don't want to tell people to early tho in case something happens. But he will want to do a risk assessment on me and the room I'm working in.

When will you tell your boss?

Xx

With my first I waited till 12 weeks and my second a bit longer, but I had a sit down job, so it didn’t matter. I think in your case, like you say, you will have to tell your boss soon.

I waited until after my 12 week scan both times once I knew all was okay. If you're not comfortable with the heavy lifting and the sickness is too much to deal with it'll be in your interest to tell them earlier.

I had to tell my boss immediately after finding out as I work in a clinical role and needed to be risk assessed, particularly with the covid situation. I’ve had terrible morning sickness (all bloody day) which hasn’t helped.

Ok ladies thank you. I think I'll see how this week goes as only found out over the weekend but sickness is already fairly bad I don't want them to think I have the big and keep getting sent home for 3 days either. X

15 weeks with my 1st.
6 weeks ( due to covid as I work in a&e) but I misscarried at 10 weeks.
This time I was 12 weeks before I said anything.

HeyDW96 · 27/10/2020 06:49

I told my boss at 7 weeks, I'm a nurse and unfortunately, due to covid, I haven't been able to avoid telling people.

For similar H&S reasons (I did a fair bit of lifting and a lot of foreign travel) I told my boss and his boss at 6 weeks - I had a few trips booked which I was still happ to do but wanted to let them know in case I had a sudden issue that I needed to stay on longer or get home faster, or just seek medical attention while away.

And also that I knew I couldn’t go to a major conference planned for the week before my due date so someone to replace me needed careful consideration (and booking on the plane - it was a 13 hour flight away on a busy route).

I didn’t tell anyone else until 13 weeks - after the 12 week checkup and then a further delay of a week as DSIL’s father died so we saw everyone at the funeral which was not the right place - so we went down home the following weekend to tell everyone. And then I told the rest of my team at work.

I told around 6/7 weeks with both. I had bleeds with both and needed to say why I was rushing to hospital. They were asked to keep it private until I shared the news which I did after 12 weeks with my first.

With my second by 8 weeks there was no hiding it

ThePinkGuitar · 27/10/2020 07:51

I didn’t have any h and s considerations so I waited until 14 weeks with first and 12 with my second.

cherrypiepie · 27/10/2020 07:51

If "something happens" would you tell you boss anyway?

This time with covid I think I would tell them as soon as possible. Would your boss keep it confidential? Would you be able to do the job? It's hard when you have a physical job too.

Hope you feel better soon 💐

mhn1 · 27/10/2020 09:03

I told my manager straight away (I was only a week into the job aswell Blush) but unfortunately had no choice as my job poses physical risk. Not ideal but at least it means you get support during the first trimester Smile Hope you feel better soon x

@Mylasmummy2102 I've had a few complications in my pregnancy so I had to tell my boss right away due to having to have time off.

PlanBea · 27/10/2020 11:54

I'm telling my boss today (12w+3) - my 12 week scan isn't actually until next week but with working remotely I don't see my boss much and I already have a 1 to 1 booked in for today so it makes sense. If I get bad news I'd be telling her anyway. I think of telling a boss as an admin thing, like calling the GP rather than an emotional of telling friends and family. As you're struggling I'd tell them now so they can make sure you're safe and comfortable!

swiftt · 27/10/2020 11:58

I told my boss straight away. I figured I’d rather have their support if anything did go wrong, and I do need to take extra precautions with work at the moment so it’s actually been good that they knew so early.

curiouscat1987 · 27/10/2020 12:52

Told mine at around 6 weeks as:

a) I wanted them to be aware in case I needed extra support if unwell etc

b) because they're a relatively new company and don't yet have a maternity/parental policy so needed as much time as possible to write it!

c) I figured it wouldnt hurt to tell them and could actually show my desire to be open and honest with them so promote a positive relationship, although I know it's totally normal to wait until you legally have to too, just a personal choice.
