Deodorant panic

Hi all I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy. I thought I was doing really well - in fact being over cautious - replacing shampoo and make up with pregnancy safe stuff. I thought for some reason using Sanex dermo sensitive roll on and the sensitive shower gel would be ok. Now I see it contains Aluminum amongst other bad things. I’ve stopped using them from now. I am panicked that I’ve already done harm. I’d like to stop going down rabbit holes and be ok...

I wouldn't be worried at all OP. You sound better than me I haven't really read what's in my products whilst being pregnant lol.

MegaBloxRoxx · 25/10/2020 12:14

I have never changed any of my products in pregnancy. I avoid ibuprofen and I a. more careful about cleaning stuff getting on my skin or breathing it in, I don't pick up the cat poo. That's about it. Try not to worry too much, it will be fine Smile

Oneandabean · 25/10/2020 13:02

I’d step away from google OP. Your antiperspirant choice is fine, don’t panic. It’s easy to get caught up in what you should and shouldn’t be using but honey just stick to the NHS avoid list and don’t read too much into anything else

JM10 · 25/10/2020 13:04

I never even thought about what was in my shampoo or deodorant or anything, didn't realise it was a thing I should be aware of

CMAYF11 · 25/10/2020 13:45

I haven't changed any of my skincare or products. I figured if I really needed to not use them I would be explicitly told by my midwife. Just like with foods.

BoringUserNam3 · 25/10/2020 13:49

You clearly have anxiety so maybe try and get some help for that

dementedpixie · 25/10/2020 13:54

Antiperspirant is fine even if it contains aluminium
I think you need to work on your anxiety
I never changed any toiletries when pregnant and have 2 healthy children

MnM156 · 25/10/2020 14:42

I have not changed any product that I have been using and I am almost in my 8th month. Makes me wonder if I have done it all wrong!

I think I've heard about this, here's the NHS advice:
www.nhs.uk/news/pregnancy-and-child/controversial-advice-on-chemicals-in-pregnancy/
It comes from a report by the Royal College of Obs and Gyns but it emphasises that there is a lack of evidence and it's difficult to study as pregnant women are exposed to a variety of chemicals on a daily basis anyway. I would try not to worry, I'm sure everything you're doing already is ensuring a safe and happy pregnancy :)

I've never even looked at things like this and I'm coming to the end of my second pregnancy. I changed to sanex after my first birth because the stuff in the scented shower gel I was using was making me really sore where I had my stitches. And I began using it a little at times throughout this pregnancy cause I became sensitive down there again. Didn't change anything else other than didn't take ibuprofen and started drinking mainly decaf tea I don't think I actually did anything else to be honest :)

Thanks so much everyone and apologies if I’ve unsettled anyone. I’ve had a pretty rough ride through IVF and am high risk so am casting round for ways to gain control. I getting help for it all and very appreciative of the reassurance I’ve had here xxx

Salt of the earth do a good aluminium free deo spray. I’ve been through a few over the years to find one that works as some of the natural ones are a bit crap but that ones good :) congratulations on your pregnancy xxx

NLBerry · 26/10/2020 10:15

Thanks : )

I gave up using aluminium based antiperspirants years ago, because I prefer to avoid them. Having said that though, the vast vast majority of women use them and continue to do so throughout pregnancy, so don't worry. If you'd like to swap to a more natural one though, I highly recommend Dr Organise roll on deodorants, particularly the lavender and tea tree ones (as these oils are anti bacterial). These are the absolute best of all the ones I've tried. The Salt of the Earth ones are also good, as another poster recommended .

Somethingsnappy · 26/10/2020 13:20

That should have said Dr Organic

thecakebadge · 26/10/2020 13:25

OP, this way madness lies. You are best to stick to factual advice from the NHS website. Nowhere does it say that you have to change your deodorant or shampoo. Don't look anywhere else online for pregnancy advice, it is hard to know what is reliable and what isn't. You can find all sorts of tosh about having to cleanse your body of 'toxins' and 'chemicals' (everything is a chemical) and you will drive yourself insane. Stick to NHS and try to stay calm.
