Fizzy drinks?!?

Hi all...I apologise for how silly or trivial this may sound but I was wondering can you drink fizzy drinks such as Pepsi Max, Diet Coke and/or Fanta Zero when TTC or pregnant?
I've read about limiting caffeine and no alcohol. I do currently drink about two cups of tea a day, no added sugar cordial and water however I do just have those days when I 'crave' a fizzy drink! 😬

Yes you can have fizzy drinks. If limiting caffeine then go for caffeine free alternatives.

Oneandabean · 23/10/2020 23:35

Fizzy drinks are fine in moderation. Avoid too much caffeine and choose normal over sugar free versions where possible as the sugar free have a lot of chemicals instead.

dementedpixie · 23/10/2020 23:37

I would never choose sugar versions over sugar free. Both my kids were fine with that

Wannabegreenfingers · 23/10/2020 23:40

I'm the opposite, would never choose sugar free over 'artificial sweetner', it's the devil's work.

dementedpixie · 23/10/2020 23:41

Well thats your opinion

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 23/10/2020 23:45

You shouldn't drink many. I used to limit myself to one can a week on a Friday. What a treat and it was also a zero one. I think Fanta and 7up are caffeine free? Not sure though. I also swapped my teabags to decaf. I did have GD in pregnancy though but midwife said one can a week is fine. I used to look forward to it. Sad I know Grin

Kimblebee19 · 23/10/2020 23:55

I stayed away from Coke but Ginger Beer was a must for the morning sickness...!

BoudiccasBoudoir · 24/10/2020 00:10

Three pregnancies, I couldn't drink anything that wasn't fizzy each time because of HG. I did lose a lot of dental enamel but that could have been the HG not the fizzy drink, I'll never know

KatieD847 · 24/10/2020 00:34

Thanks everyone for your replies!

@MasksGlovesSoapScrubs that's a good idea decaf tea bags and I think I will try and limit to one fizzy can a week as a treat. Also...can I ask what does GD mean?

@BoudiccasBoudoir what does HG mean?

Sorry I am a MN newbie I need to get used to the acronyms. ☺️

GD is gestational diabetes and HG is hyperemesis gravidarum (aka extremely bad 'morning' sickness that can end up with hospitalisation).

I didn't limit sugar free fizzy drinks and although I reduced my (high) caffeine intake, I was definitely over the recommended amount. I wouldn't worry too much, both babies turned out just fine.

Sansa87 · 24/10/2020 08:20

I switched to decaff tea @KatieD847 IMO it tastes the same.

Fanta has no caffeine in (I googled lots) i really miss coke, I was a bit of an addict. I did drink the caffeine free one for a few weeks but by week 7 I suddenly didn’t like it anymore 🙄 so now my fizzy is Fanta, which is good because I’m craving citrus stuff atm anyway

BoudiccasBoudoir · 24/10/2020 08:21

Yes hyperemesis gravidarum
I was so sick I was medicated, nearly hospitalised, could barely eat etc. Sick multiple times a day so the enamel issues on my teeth likely came from being sick not the fizzy drink, but I don't know for sure.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 24/10/2020 11:48

Sorry yes it means gestational diabetes

LittleTiger007 · 24/10/2020 12:12

I have ginger ale every day (just one) for the morning sickness... it really helps.
I too would never have sweeteners as they are poison (some of the ingredients are found in rat poison) many studies link them to cancers. I know too much sugar isn’t good either so just limit it.
I’m drinking gallons of fizzy water. I know the bubbles don’t help the gas situation (TMI) but they do help settle the stomach.

PopsicleHustler · 24/10/2020 12:24

I had a can of diet fizzy coke yesterday and made me feel terribly unwell, I had to go for a lie down. Currently 27 weeks pregnant and most fizzy drinks make me feel sick and I usually love them.

Fanta zero hasn't been too bad for me though

Snackasaurus · 24/10/2020 15:55

I've had fizzy drinks through my pregnancy but just be cautious of the caffeine etc. Fizzy vimto has no caffeine and I LOVE it :)

MichelleOR84 · 24/10/2020 17:08

I love fizzy drinks but they give me heartburn! I avoid them because of that ! But tonight I’m gonna treat myself and have one . I like Diet Coke better than regular Coke and even though regular Coke is likely better even with the sugar , if I’m gonna treat myself I’m gonna have what I like best . Baby will be fine :)

Kimblebee19 · 24/10/2020 19:20

@Sansa87 what brand of decaf tea did you find to be ok? Not currently pregnant but for future reference, I ended up not bothering at all because the Yorkshite (typo, but it was...) decaf tea I tried I found horrendous!

WhySoSensitive · 24/10/2020 19:24

If you drink Coke Zero or Pepsi max, you can have seven cans before you reach the advised caffeine limit.
I live off it so find my pregnancy limitations difficult 😂

Sansa87 · 24/10/2020 19:35

@Kimblebee19 I really like the pg tips version. Currently using the tetley because that’s all the shop had, & that ones alright too. Other than a Lichfield one from booker, they are the only ones I’ve tried though.
