I’ve read to avoid it in the first trimester at least. I’m bleach blonde and my roots are desperately needing done but I’m holding off.

dementedpixie · 23/10/2020 22:44

Nhs says you may wish to avoid in the 1st trimester but doesnt say you shouldn't do it. If its not touching your scalp its even less risky.
Hair can be more unpredictable in pregnancy though so be aware

Mc3209 · 23/10/2020 22:47

I've dyed my hair at least 3 times during this pregnancy, including going from dark to blonde. All ok (with me and the baby, I am 39 weeks).
Your skin might be more sensitive in pregnancy, so you have a higher chance of reacting to the dye.

Timetotry123 · 23/10/2020 22:53

The bleach won’t touch my scalp but the brown will. There’s so much conflicting advice online too.

The advice I was given is that the hormones make the hair lift more than usual so your hair can lift more if dyed in the first 12 weeks when the hormones are the most high.

Oneandabean · 23/10/2020 23:40

There’s no evidence hair dye enters the blood stream and even if it did the chemicals in dye that would get through would be so small that it wouldn’t cause any issues.

I’d let you salon know your pregnant as they should do a skin allergy test 48 hours before your appointment. Pregnancy can cause you to be more sensitive so it’s important to have the skin test. Other than that there’s no problems having your hair dyed

I'm now on my 4th pregnancy and iv had bleach.. box dye.. hair stripper.. the lot on my hair through all trimesters.. it was fine.. x

surprisebabyshower · 24/10/2020 00:36

It won't hurt the baby, your skin just may be more sensitive than usual.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 24/10/2020 02:36

I was bleaching my hair my whole pregnant - had no idea that you should avoid it! Anyway, said baby is now 16 months old and appears to be unscathed.

Fruitloops34 · 24/10/2020 07:47

I had my hair dyed 4 weeks ago at 9 weeks and me and Peanut are fine.

DiabeticFirstBaby · 24/10/2020 09:51

I had my normal highlights done at 7 weeks, agree the guidance isn't clear, my hairdresser said having high lights means the dye doesn't sit on your scalp so i decided to go ahead and was fine.

Chanel05 · 24/10/2020 09:57

It's fine though suggested to wait until after first trimester. I was super paranoid and didn't dye mine until 37 weeks! As you can imagine, I had some very attractive roots! Wink

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 10:03

The NHS site helpfully (Confused) says this:

Many women decide to wait to dye their hair until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, when the risk of chemical substances harming the baby is much lower

It doesn't actually say not to do it or that it's dangerous

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 24/10/2020 11:20

I asked my midwife this question and she said it was fine but due to the hormones the dye might not take as well as it usually does

I had my hair done at 7 weeks and no problems

LittleTiger007 · 24/10/2020 12:16

I spoke to my hairdresser about it and she said most colours are fine. I don’t think it’s supposed to touch the scalp but foils etc are fine in the first trimester.

Timetotry123 · 24/10/2020 12:47

Great thanks everyone Smile

I would avoid the brown. It has ppd in it which I wouldn’t recommend. Bleach is fine.
