Hello,

When I was pregnant with my first child I was referred to social services, mainly due to issues with the father. They closed the case immedaitely after pre birth assessent after no concerns because I wasn't with the father.

I'm now pregnant with my second child via I new partner (previously suffered miscarrige during lockdown) who is stable and never had social services in his life. If midwife asks, do I tell her about the pre birth assessment even though it was nearly 8 years ago and no cocerns were raised?

Will SS want to speak to me again? I just want to be prepared, I've never had them involved apart from that one time. I'm also in a wheelchair and worried I may get unfairly judged, even though I have raised my first child as a single mother with no issues.

Firstly in my booking appt (NHS scotland) they didnt ask anything about SS involvement. It may however be on your notes from before. If they so ask I'd be honest but highlight the referral was about your ex partner, SS found no concerns about you and that this is a different partner.

If she asks then tell her the current situation.
Social services aren't going to get involved if you have a different partner and have been raising your last dc for 8 years without incident.
They truly aren't going to interested in the fact you use a wheelchair. Why would they be?

PolarBearStrength · 22/10/2020 16:43

Yes just tell her what happened previously. She will likely do a referral and they will say they have no concerns, case closed (I’m a midwife).

If you lied and it came out then it would reflect very poorly.

It is not relevant and why would a health professional refer unless there is actually a reason to? (I am manager in Social Services).

Apart from to create work needlessly!

If you were a manager you would know why surely?

You will possibly get a phone call at most asking if everything is still OK ex still out of the picture etc case closed

I would never lie, I just don't want to have to prove myself again.

They might not even bother calling.

I often send referrals along the lines of ‘X’s family had a social worker called Y in 2015 due to domestic violence/unstable housing/partner’s drug use etc. The case was closed and she no longer has contact with Z and I have no current concerns.’ And they reply just confirming that the case has been closed and there are no ongoing issues.
